The Basics of Camo& What It Is

Did you know that the camo print is not a specific pattern but an array of patterns and color mixtures? Even though it used to be only worn by the military and hunters to blend in with their surroundings, it is now the opposite.

There are camo prints in a variety of color variants and made into all kinds of clothing items. Because of this, it’s easier to look at it as an abstract print and embrace it.

When I talk about the basics of how to wear camo, what I am saying is how you see most people wearing it. Since camo has been around in the fashion scene for over 5 years now, the three of us have showcased many options in the past.

How to Wear Camo for Fall with Other Prints

Combining the abstract camo print with other prints is an advanced way of how to wear camo for fall. Even though not all of these prints would be considered fall prints, it’s still a fun experiment.

Honestly, I wasn’t enthralled with all of my attempts below. Yet, part of the learning process is analyzing the wins as well as the losses.

Dots

The prompt for this outfit was camo and dots. I don’t have a lot of polka dots in my closet, so I decided to get creative with this eShakti dress.

Sometimes print mixing is easier when you combine prints of the same colors, and while this camo is more red/brown, it’s on the same warm scale as the orange dress.

How I put together the outfit is I layered the red camo print tank top over the dress. The dress came with a large self-belt, which I used to hide the bottom hem of the shirt to make the dress look even more like a skirt.

My thoughts: I thought the two prints went well together for the colors, and I loved how the top layered over the dress. I like it but it’s not my favorite.

Plaid

Plaid is definitely considered a fall print so it seems very appropriate to mix with the traditional green camo print. Even though this example doesn’t combine 2 prints with the same color, it works.

How I put together this outfit is I started with the leggings. Since I was going to add in the plaid cardigan (which is still available on Belong Lifestyle USA and even in a red version), I picked a light and bright neutral for the top.

The layered necklaces are from a woman I met at FierceCon and the mocassins are from this fall’s Jambu selection which we all showcased in this post.

My thoughts: This is one of my favorites of these 5 mixed prints with camo for some reason. I’m not sure if it’s the silhouette of the longer cardigan and tight leggings or the color scheme.

Stripes

Many women will say that stripes are the easiest print to mix with others. Maybe because stripes are something that is symmetrical and classic?

I had one comment on Instagram who thought the black and white stripes were too contrasting for the muted camo shorts.

I wore the cropped jacket over the striped top to tame it down and then added color with my red accessories and burgundy Walking Cradles sneakers.

My thoughts: Even I think this outfit is too busy. I still like this striped top with the camo shorts, but next time I’ll try a different jacket.

Floral for Fall?

A light-colored floral top is not what you would expect for a fall look. Then again, we never used to wear white after Labor Day either. I think it’s good to be a rebel with these expectations, and style the clothes we like.

This type of print mixing is easy on the eyes because it’s more subtle. The tan camo print tee is barely noticeable as a print. Therefore, it blends well with the light floral blouse.

I toughened it up with distressed jeans and my “ Eagle” Jambu boots.

My thoughts: I like how this look has the yin and yang of feminine and masculine, plus the colors seem to vibe.

Styling Graphic Print

I wanted to wear this camo blazer that I picked up in the men’s department for a steal last year. You might recognize it as my neutral print with my pink skirt outfit. It’s one of those pieces that really looks different depending on the colors it is paired with.

This green graphic print dress is one that gets worn a lot in the summer because it’s lightweight and doesn’t show sweat stains. Since the blazer is a tad oversized, it acts as a great long jacket with the dress.

The sneakers are another example of the Orleans sneakers from Walking Cradles in silver glitter. This silver glitter print has been restocked on their site along with the black glitter version because they have been so popular. The glitter makes them sassy, yet they are comfy for a day of walking.

My thoughts: I’m still on the fence about the look. It doesn’t wow me, but I don’t hate it.

The Last Word on How to Wear Camo for Fall

I believe it’s good for our brains to be open to new ideas. Just like in the quote above, that is my goal in showcasing these examples. You never know how much you like something until you actually embrace it.

When you are looking to try a new style or print, I always recommend finding a deal on it before really committing. Here are the best ways to do that:

• Borrow it from a friend first.
• Check the secondhand stores. Online or in-person
• Make sure to look in all sections of the sales including men and children.
