How to Hand Stitch
I’m going to show you guys how to hand stitch.
Sewing is an incredibly practical skill, and being able to hand stitch is great because you don’t need a machine.
All you need is a needle, thread, thimble and scissors.
Tools and materials:
- Small needle
- Polyester thread (best for beginners)
- Thimble scissors
- Fabric
1. To start a stitch
Put your thread halfway through the needle and tie the ends in a knot.
Pull the thread through the fabric leaving about half an inch at the end.
Thread the needle in and out and pull it through the loop of the knot at the end of the thread.
Thread the needle halfway through the fabric and wrap the string twice around the needle. Then pull and tighten.
2. Running stitch
For a running stitch, weave the needle in and out of the fabric in a straight line.
3. Backstitch
For a backstitch, thread the needle under and over like you’re starting a running stitch, but this time go back to the first stitch and thread through the same spot.
Then bring the needle back through where the next stitch will begin.
Put the needle through the previous stitch and repeat. The backstitch is a more secure stitch.
To finish any type of stitch, tie a knot through the last stitch.
