In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a DIY jean bag.

If you have an old pair of jeans sitting around at home that you’re not getting any use out of, this is a great way to upcycle them into a trendy and functional bag.

Grab your tools, and let’s jump on in!

Tools and materials:

  • Jeans
  • Tape measure
  • Tailor's chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Needle and thread
  • Button
  • Chain
  • Clear nail polish
Measuring the jeans

1. Measure the jeans

Take a pair of jeans and measure 34 cm (13.4 inches) up from the bottom. Mark this point and draw a line.

Cutting the jeans

2. Cut the jeans

Proceed to cut along the line.

Gluing

3. Glue closed the open side

Turn the piece of denim wrong side out. Then sew or glue the open side that you cut along closed.

Once done, turn the denim the right way out again.

Adding button

4. Place a button on the purse

Fold over the top part of the denim as shown and place a button just below the fold.

Marking the fold

5. Mark the fold

Open up your fold and mark either end of the fold line with the tailor’s chalk.

Cutting the seam

6. Cut the seam

Cut off some of the seams from the jeans so that you have one piece that measures 10cm (4 inches) and two pieces that measure 7cm (2.8 inches).

Attaching large loop

7. Attach the large loop

The large piece will be the one that the button does up with. Shape it into a loop and sew or glue it in between the two layers of denim.

Make sure to first measure the denim and find the midpoint so that the loop is in the middle. Also, sew or glue the button down.

Attaching small loops

8. Attach the smaller loops

Then take the two smaller pieces, fold them into loops and position them on either side of the purse at the top. Sew or glue them into place.

Applying clear nail polish

9. Apply clear nail polish

Paint all of the loops with some clear nail polish. This will make them more rigid and durable.

Adding chain

10. Add the chain

The final step is to attach the chain to the side loops.
