Everybody needs at least one pair of palazzo pants. They’re flowy, comfy, and just perfect for wearing around the house, or even for a day of shopping! Don’t have a pair? I’ll show you how you can make your own from a maxi skirt. If you don’t happen to have an extra maxi skirt lying around, they are often quite easy to find at your local thrift store. Just pick one with a pattern you love and I’ll show you how to do the rest with my step-by-step tutorial below!

Tools and Materials

Tools and Materials:

  • Maxi skirt
  • Seam ripper
  • Scissors
  • Pair of pants
  • Pins
  • Elastic
  • Sewing machine
  • Safety pin
Remove the Elastic
Remove the Elastic

I started by removing the elastic in the waistband. I opened a hole in one part of the waistband with a seam ripper, cut the elastic, and pulled it out.

Fold in Half
Create the Pattern

With the elastic removed, I lay the skirt out flat on the floor and folded it in half lengthwise.

Create the Pattern

Then I lay a pair of paints on top of the skirt to give me an idea of the pattern I needed. Palazzo pants are very loose, and as you can see I used a tight pair of jeans for my pattern, so I extended the crotch and legs of the pants as needed.

Cut Out the Pattern

Next, I cut out the pattern. Make sure to leave the pants the same length as the skirt. This allows you to skip the step of hemming the bottom of the pant legs. Now I was ready to sew!

I opened up the new pant legs and lay them on top of each other with the right sides facing each other. Then I sewed along either curve at the top of the pants, as you can see in the picture.

Sew the Legs

With the right sides still facing each other, I sewed the inseam of the pants.

I seam ripped the waistband so that I could create my own. Then I folded the hem over enough to create a hole for the elastic and sewed almost all the way around the pants, making sure to leave a hole to insert the elastic.

Insert Elastic

I attached a safety pin to the end of the elastic and thread it through the waistband. Then I handstitched the ends of the elastic together and sewed the last bit of the waistband that I had left open for the elastic.
