Face mask tutorials are everywhere now since they have become such an integral part of our day-to-day realities. Most of them are complicated and involve an understanding of sewing, which I know can be a major put-off to a lot of DIYers. In this tutorial I will walk you through four different face masks that you can make easily at home — no sewing required! All you’ll need is a T-shirt (because you know how I love a good upcycle) and a coffee filter. So check out these four techniques, and watch the video to see me make them step-by-step.

Cut T-shirt

This first method for making a face-mask is so quick and easy! All you’ve gotta do is take an old T-shirt and cut off ten inches from the bottom. Then cut open one side and open it up. Now, just place a coffee filter, folded in half, in the center.

Tie your mask

Fold the shirt in thirds lengthwise, over the filter, leaving enough space for your mouth and nose (about five inches.) Then tie it around your head and you’re good to go!

Add some personality

If you want to add a little something extra to your mask, print out a saying or design. Then use a crafting knife to cut out the design and use an ordinary glue stick to paste your stencil to your mask. Now take a flat sponge brush and dab fabric or acrylic paint onto the fabric through your stencil. Let it dry for 24 hours and wash it before wearing it. You can also tie the mask on before inserting the coffee filter if you’d prefer to have the filter against your mouth rather than the t-shirt.

Make straps

For this version, you’re going to start off the same and cut 10” off the bottom of your shirt. Instead of cutting open one side, however, you’re going to cut off both sides and also remove the hem because you only need one layer this time. Lay it flat, and fold it in half lengthwise then fold it in half again. Now measure 4 ½” on the folded side and mark it with pins. If you don’t have pins, just use a pencil! Next turn it around and you’re going to take your scissors and cut strips on the not folded side. Start at 1” away from the bottom and top edges and cut horizontally until you reach the pins. Then move away those strips, and cut out the fabric in between them.

Insert the filter

Pull the strings to make them curl and then open up the mask. Add a filter in the middle, and fold it back up. Now you can tie it around your head, with the folded part facing down so that the filter doesn’t slide out.

Decorate it

If plain is boring to you, add some pizazz! You can use a pen or marker to decorate it. I made mine into an easy smiley face, but you can also add a different emotion on the inside and reverse it based on your current mood.

Use a T-shirt with a cool design

This last mask is a bit different. You’re going to start off by cutting 15” off a shirt with a design you like, and cut one side open down the middle. Open it up and fold it into thirds lengthwise, and then fold it in half. Now measure in 4 ½” for adults, or 4” for kids, and mark it with pins. Now you’re going to cut strips again like last time, except that you’re going to cut the folded side open so that you have three strips on each side, then cut away the excess in the middle. Pull the strips to make them roll up, then flip over the fabric and repeat the same thing on the other side. Open it up and place the filter in the middle, then fold the top down and bottom up to cover it.

Braid the strips

What’s fun about this mask is that the straps that you tie around your head are braided! It gives it an extra fun and finished feel. So braid your strings and knot the ends. Done!
