In a few easy and simple steps you will have a new gorgeous pair of heels and the best part is, the straps are interchangeable! My step-by-step guide will show you the ins and out of making these stunning shoes and what’s amazing is I even give an option for a totally no-sew method! Get started on DIYing a gorgeous new pair of shoes!

Tools and materials:

  • Pair of strap shoes
  • Silk fabric/ silk necktie
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
Remove the straps
Remove the shoe straps

To get started on these killer shoes, make sure you are using a pair with a removable strap. Start by removing the strap from the casing on the shoe. What’s amazing is that you can use any shoe with a removable strap whether it’s thick, like the one in the picture, or thinner with a buckle.

Fold your fabric
Create customized straps

For the new straps, you are going to need a piece of silk fabric. I chose to use this gorgeous patterned piece with a pair of olive green shoes but feel free to get creative with your fabric color and design to match your shoes! Make sure to fold your fabric to the width you want your strap to be.

Rip the fabric

Next, make a little nip with your scissors and then rip your fabric at the edge of the fold. Most silk fabric will rip clean but if you prefer to cut, that totally works as well. I love ripping because it saves me a ton of time!

Now it’s time to sew the strap. Make sure that it’s folded, right sides together, and then sew leaving about a quarter of an inch from the edge for seam allowance. I recommend doubling back to keep the strap secure and long-lasting!

Turn right side out

If your fabric is wide enough, use your fingers to turn it right side out. If your strap is a little thinner, attach a safety pin to help you turn it right side out.

Press the strap

To give that strap a gorgeous finish and take away that almost bubbly look, it’s important to press it. Use your non-dominant hand to roll out the seam so that it will lie in the correct position. Press over the whole strap to get it lying flat and looking professional!

Cut the edges
Finish the strap ends

You can totally leave the ends of your strap squared off but I decided to cut them at an angle so that they would look amazing hanging down at the bottom of my bow.

Fold in the edges

To make sure your strap has a clean finish, fold the ends in and make sure to tuck in the little corner.

Sew a blind hem

Now it’s time to hand sew a blind hem. Start by inserting the needle inside so that the knot is hidden. Next, you’re going to sew across the top of the folds so that the thread won’t be seen.

Run the needle in the fold

As you continue sewing, make sure you are perpendicular from where you started and run your needle in the fold so that it won’t be seen. Once you get to the end, knot it off to get the perfect blind hem for your gorgeous strap.

Press the ends

As soon as your hem is done, press the edge of the strap to really re-emphasize the folds you created.

Attach the new straps

Now it’s time for the fun part! Take your stunning straps and thread them through the shoe. If you need a little help, using a pencil to push the fabric through does the trick! Once you’ve pulled the fabric through, make sure to check that it is even on both sides. If you want to cover the toe strap of the shoe in fabric, it will totally customize your shoes and make them one of a kind! Just make sure to add fabric to the bottom of the toe strap as well to give it a perfect finish!

Use a store-bought tie

If you don’t want the hassle of sewing, you can use a store-bought necktie for your stunning strap. Just remember these come in a standard size and length so make sure when you’re buying them, that they will work with your shoes.

I’ve done something similar with a pair of plain pumps. Just run the tie under the shoe, close to the heel. Pull the tie up and cross it at the back of your ankle. Wrap as many times as you like and tie in a bow in the front or back. I’ve made shoe clips to match. You can get the clips on Amazon.
