I love trying out new things, and I had my eye on a Zakka-style wicker bag for a while. So I decided to grab some fabric and a wicker basket and give it a shot. I love how this project came out. It’s so cute, and I can’t wait to use it. So choose a fabric you love and grab a basket, and follow along to make your own bag!

Tools and materials:

  • Wicker basket
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing clips
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Thick thread
  • Sewing machine

Measure basket

The first thing you’re going to do is measure the top of your wicket basket. Take your measuring tape and measure about ¾ of it, then divide that number by 2.

Cut out the fabric

With your fabric folded in half, mark the measurement of the basket on the fold. Then draw a diagonal line from the mark all the way to the end of the fabric. Cut out on the line and use that triangle as a guide to cut out a second piece. Open up the triangles and hem the sides, sewing the base with a zigzag stitch.

Pin the fabric

Take one fabric triangle and clip it around the lip of the basket. Then clip the second triangle in place, overlapping the fabric where needed.

How to sew a storage bag

Sew the fabric

Using a needle and thick thread, you’re now going to sew the fabric in place. Feed the needle through the holes in the basket, using the vertical twigs as a guide. Sew two stitches around the vertical twigs. When you’re done, sew the sides of the fabric together with a regular stitch.

Add lining

Turn the fabric down and clip your lining to the fabric, right side facing out. Then hand-sew it in place. Once you’re done adding the lining, pick the fabric back up so that the lining is now on the inside, then hem the top of the lining to the fabric.

That’s it! That’s how you make a super cute and unique Zakka-style basket bag. I’m obsessed with the way it came out. I love the pattern of the fabric, and you can customize this project by choosing a fabric that suits you and your personality. Of course, I’d love to see what fabric you choose and how your bags come out, so be sure to leave me a picture in the comments section!
