With a pandemic going on with no end in sight, facemasks have become a very crucial part of our wardrobes. Disposable masks aren’t the most attractive and furthermore can feel like a waste of money. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through creating your own reusable facemask that you can customize however you want.

Tools and materials:

  • Fabric
  • Ruler
  • 2 15 cm strips of elastic
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing machines
  • Scissors

Fold the fabric

To start off, your fabric should be 30 cm (11.8”) in width and 25 cm (9.8”) in height. Grab the ends and fold it in half, right sides together. Sew a line at the edge, leaving an opening in the middle. Then open the seam and topstitch both sides of it.

Insert elastic

Grab a ruler and mark 4 cm (1.6”) from the top on either edge. Then stick one 15 cm (5.9”) strip of elastic at that mark and pin it in place. Then bring the elastic down to the bottom from inside and pin it there as well. Repeat this on the other side with your second elastic. Then stitch down both edges, sewing the elastics in place.

Fold down the top

Take some scissors and snip off all four corners. Then turn the fabric right side out through the opening you left, making sure to push out the corners. Now take the top of the mask and fold it down so that your fold is where the elastics are, and sew on the fold, leaving you with a flap.

Fold the middle of the mask

Fold over the mask and make a mark in the middle. Then fold the mask into the middle on either side of the mark. Now grab the flap and cover the fold you just made with it. Then pin through the fold into the flap. Follow the fold to the other side of the mask and pin the flap onto the fold there as well. Once you’ve done that, go ahead and sew the edges of the mask.

How to make a facemask
Pinch the flap

Grab the center of the flap and push it up, pinching from the center. This will create a triangle shape at the top which will go over your nose. Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to wear your facemask!

I love this facemask! We all know the importance of wearing facemasks with the current situation, and it’s so much more fun to wear one that I love! You can customize this facemask depending on the fabric you choose, so you can have it be in any color or with any pattern. I’d love to see your different facemasks, so be sure to leave me a picture in the comments!
