Trench coats are such an amazing piece of clothing, and they are a staple of fall. It can be so easy to just throw on a trench coat and call it a day. Sometimes, though, you want to keep that fall coziness while looking stylish. In this tutorial, I’ll show you different ways to style for fall, all of which include one of two thrifted trench coats! Mix your patterns

I love mixing and matching patterns. I feel like the design on this top goes really well with the strips on the pants. So I took this classic outfit and threw my favorite trench on top. I love this coat because it’s just so seasonless. I wear it in fall, spring, winter, whenever. I’ve had this coat for years and because it’s a bit oversized, I love tying up the sleeves.

How to style a trench coat
Switch to wool

When it starts to get colder in late fall or early winter, I switch over to this wool trench coat. I love the color and the lining and how it just works despite being so oversized.

Black jumpsuit

When it comes to grabbing a drink with friends or a date, this black jumpsuit is my go-to outfit. It’s fun and flattering and perfect for a night out. The best part is that it has pockets, so I don’t even have to worry about a bag to go with it. And, of course, it works perfectly under my classic tan trench coat.

Tone on tone

I love the earthy tone on tone look of this outfit; it just screams autumn. I love the way a turtle neck looks under a trench coat, so I went with my cashmere turtle neck to get that cozy look. The brown pants and darker trench coat work so perfectly together.

Swap out the pants

For a little less brown, this outfit works great with jeans as well. Denim is actually not my favorite these days, because it’s just not as comfortable as some other materials. If you’re a jeans girl, though, you can see how well they’ll look with your favorite trench coat!

Turtle neck dress

On the topic of comfort, I love this turtle neck wool dress. It’s so easy and versatile and works perfectly under both the trench coats, as well as any pair of shoes. Check out the video to see this outfit with white sneakers for a casual look, or boots when it gets even colder.

Leather pants

These leather pants are one of my favorite pieces of clothing that I’ve thrifted. For this look, I’m pairing them with a striped button-down that’s a quarter tucked in. I went with the tan trench coat for this outfit, as I actually wasn’t a huge fan of the way it looked with the darker brown.

Trench coat styling tips
Wear a darker base

For the darker trench coat, I prefer a darker base, so I swapped the shirt for a black long-sleeved one and tucked it into the pants. This outfit is one of my favorite base layers, and I think having that go-to outfit is so important.

Make it edgy

For a bit of a sexier vibe, I love this button-down shirt which I wore wrap-tucked with a bralette underneath. I feel like it gives the outfit some edge without going overboard. I also love the way the brown of the shirt compliments the brown of the trench coat. This outfit also totally works with the lighter trench, so it’s definitely a winner.

Wallpaper pants

For a fun statement piece, I have these wallpaper pants. The pattern is so fun and I feel like blue goes so well with brown, so both the blue and the brown in them just work perfectly with the brown in the rest of the outfit.
