Face masks are essential these days! Rather than go out and buy disposable ones that constantly need to be replaced, I decided to put on my DIY hat and make my own, awesome face mask to wear. The best part is, my new mask is washable and has a filter pocket! This project is perfect for a beginner sewist, but even if you're experienced I think you should give it a try and make yourself a face mask or two.
To kick off this DIY, cut a piece of rectangular fabric 16 by 8 inches. Fold the fabric in half with the folded edge facing you and pin it in place to keep the fabric from moving.
Sew the side of the fabric opposite the fold leaving a gap in the middle. Sew about three inches on each side to get the right-sized gap.
Next, place your fabric so that the seam is facing upwards and in the center. Take two pieces of elastic and pin each edge inside the fabric in the top and bottom corners.
Hop back over to your sewing machine and sew the elastics in place with a straight stitch.
Then turn your mask right side out through the filter hole you had left and press the fabric.
Next, fold three pleats on each side of the mask and pin the pleats in place. Try and make sure the pleats are even!
Take your mask back to the sewing machine and stitch all the way around, sewing the pleats in place as you go.
