It’s so satisfying to make a clothing item from scratch. In this tutorial, I’ll take you through the steps of making an adorable lace top. All you’ll need is some fabric, your sewing machine, and the pattern. I did actually draft the pattern myself, so if you’re interested in making your own pattern, check out this video first. Once you’ve got the pattern, follow these instructions and you’ll end up with a gorgeous lace top.
First, take your fabric and fold it in half with the right side facing up. Then take the pattern piece for your sleeve and place it at the edge of the fabric. Cut off the selvage on the edge, following the pattern of the lace, to get a scalloped edge. Now place the rest of the pattern pieces on the folded fabric and cut them out.
Lay out your front piece, and place the back piece over it, with the right sides facing each other. Then head over to your sewing machine and sew the shoulders together, then the sides.
Take your sleeves and lay them out so that the curves are facing each other. Then fold them in half, right sides together, bringing the top down to the bottom. Now sew the bottom edge together with ½” seam allowance.
Turn your shirt inside out. Then take one of your sleeves, right sides out, and place it through the armhole of the shirt. Make sure you’re putting the right sleeve on the right side and the left sleeve on the left side. Then pin and sew the sleeves in place. Repeat this with the other sleeve.
It’s now time to hem the neckline. Since you’re using lace and therefore don’t have to worry about fraying, you can just fold the neckline over once and pin it in place. Then go ahead and sew it down. Now hem the bottom of the shirt as well, by also folding it over once and sewing it.
That’s all there is to it! This is such an easy top to make and it’s absolutely adorable. You can wear it over a light camisole, or even a colored one depending on the look you’re going for. It will also look great with a skirt or slacks for an elegant vibe, or jeans if you’re going for casual. I love the dainty look of the top, and how easy it is to dress it up or down. Of course, you can make this in any color lace, as well. I’d love to see how your tops turn out, so please leave me a picture in the comments!
