In this tutorial, I will be showing you a quick and easy way to make a mini skirt. I decided to add a few details to the skirt to make this DIY project a bit more interesting. The fake pockets and drawstring definitely take this skirt to another level of glam and style.
To start off, I used my mini skirt pattern and placed it on my fabric. I cut around it adding about an inch on each side to make this skirt a bit wider. I also cut straight at the waist instead of making a curve in the fabric.
For this cute skirt, I wanted to make quite a thick waistband. I took a piece of elastic about an inch and a quarter wide and measured double that with a bit of seam allowance. I marked my fabric so that I would know exactly where to cut.
I then went ahead and cut the waistband.
Once I had the piece cut, I pinned the ends together and sewed.
I overlapped the ends of the elastic and topstitched.
For the fake pockets, I used a bra strap and for the ties, I used a shoelace that I had. I marked in from the sides 3 inches plus seam allowance and down from the top 4 inches plus seam allowance. I used chalk and drew in my fake pockets following my markings.
After I had drawn on the curve, I pinned my bra strap over the drawn line.
I sewed the strap along the curve and topstitched it on both ends.
I placed the front and back piece of the skirt, right sides together, and pinned and stitched the side seams.
I turned the skirt right side out and trimmed the waistline so that it would be straight.
Next, I pinned and sewed the elastic waistband onto my skirt. The waistband is a really important feature of the skirt and I wanted to make sure it was perfect.
Lastly, I stitched the drawstring onto the waistband and my skirt was ready!
