Create an outfit formula

When it comes to creating a formula there are 2 ways to go about it. The first is to wear the same outfit every day like Steve Jobs. The second way is a bit more my speed! For me, an outfit formula is a combination of basics that can be mixed and matched to create some really unique and distinct outfits.

A great example of this is that personally, in winter, I almost exclusively wear some combination of a sweater and jeans. I have a few different sweaters in different colors and textures as well as a few pairs of jeans. I mix the pieces to create endless outfit combinations. What’s amazing about outfit formulas is you really can do more with less!

Create a color palette

Develop a color palette

Another really great way to maximize your wardrobe and create a coherent style is by developing and sticking to a color palette. People often think a minimalist wardrobe has to be black and white but that is not true! Wear colors that you like and create a color palette that makes your pieces interchangeable so that you can maximize on the clothes you have. Try picking 3-7 neutrals and colors that go really well together and complement each other.

Find key pieces

Invest in key pieces

The next tip is to invest in key pieces. No matter your style preference, most of our wardrobes tend to be built around a few key pieces. Figure out what those building block pieces are for you and don’t be afraid to invest in high-quality options that will last. Try investing in the pieces that you will get the most use out of. Quality is so important for a minimalist wardrobe! The goal isn’t to spend all your money. It is to identify areas in your wardrobe where it would be helpful to have a high-quality, lasting piece.

Pay attention to fabric

The next minimalist tip is an important one. When it comes to fabric and minimalism, we know that basic is better than patterns. Patterns tend to be less versatile and can go out of style a lot quicker than a solid. Instead of opting for different patterns, try and look for solid pieces with different textures. The detail of a unique texture can really elevate a wardrobe.

Wear timeless patterns

Of course, there is a place for patterns in a minimalist wardrobe. If you love patterns, opt for simple patterns or patterns that are timeless.

Create rules

Create rules for yourself

Is there a piece that you know you won’t wear, even if it looks good on someone else, or are there pieces you love wearing time and time again? Try defining your personal style and then have fun within that style without buying clothes that you will never wear.

The minimalist wardrobe

For example, I love the way colorful, wide-leg pants look on other people but knowing my personal style I would never wear them. I took the idea and what I loved from that style and transferred it into something that I would wear. These slim-cut, forest green pants are so true to my personal style. Creating rules isn’t about limiting what you wear. It’s about having pieces that work with your style that you know you will wear.
