Think Outside the Box With Your Clothes

It just tickles my fancy to find different ways to wear the same thing.

And I don't mean just combining a piece with a different color scheme or such. For me thinking outside the box means taking a piece that was made to be worn one way, and wearing it in a whole different way.

It's no different than when I took a skirt, and styled it 5 different ways, yet only one way was wearing it as a skirt.

Interesting Ideas of Why and How to For Layering a Skirt Over a Dress

It’s the Chinese New Year Collaboration–check out my mom’s “purse”

My 80+ year old mother, Charlotte, is using this trick with her "scarf". This same "scarf" is seen on her below.

This same woven "scarf" could also be used as a belt.

Other times Charlotte has used this trick with a similar item:

Lesley is wearing a "skirt" that she recently thrifted. Yet, it can be worn another way below.

By hiking it up under her armpits, adding a belt to give it some waist definition, and then throwing a cardigan over top with the same colors, it is now a "dress."

Insider tip: This could be a great way to "shorten" a too long skirt.

This sheer top I’ve worn when I was discussing halftees this last summer.

I decided to see how I could make this top into something totally different below.

And viola!! It's now a bright and beautiful scarf.

There are gold rings on the sleeves and they acted as scarf clips. This enabled me to pull the longer parts through the rings so it wasn't as overpowering.

Secrets

The secret to discovering how pieces can mix and match like this is to stop categorizing them. It’s not any different than when I knitted a skirt for a friend, but I wasn’t there when I gave it to her. So she thought it was an infinity scarf.

Therefore, it can help to describe the item instead. For instance my top above, is a sheer piece of material with 2 openings. This sounds very much like an infinity scarf, so why not try it that way?? Depending on the material, it may or may not work, but you’ll never know until you try.

Another secret is to be open to new ideas. It may sound like the silliest thing ever to wear your long skirt as a dress, but you may be surprised at how good it looks.

It’s also very helpful to stop limiting yourself to only women’s clothing or the “size” you wear. I have found that some of my husbands shirts, can be the best tunics!!

I have a maxie skirt that has a wide elastic waist

band that is slightly ruffled on top with a lot of stitching. On a hot summer day I wore it as a

strapless dress! Next time I will add a belt or

    something else creative.

Then you're already great at thinking outside the box Elaine. I think it opens up our closet and wardrobe so much when we start recreating our pieces like this!!!

      Thanks for sharing!
