I had so much fun making this skirt, so I know you guys will love it! This tutorial on how to make a godet skirt will take you from the very first stage of making the pattern to the very last stage when the skirt is done and ready to wear.

Tools and materials:

  • Neoprene scuba fabric
  • Tape measure
  • Ruler
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Sewing machine

Make your pattern

The first step is to make your pattern. To do so, you need to find the circumference of your waist. Grab a tape measure and simply wrap it around your waist. My waist is 66 centimeters (about 26 inches). Next, divide your waist measurement by six (66 divided by six) to find the measurement for your pattern - for me, it’s 11. Apply your measurement to your pattern and trace it out. (Note the rectangle is 11 centimeters wide!)

Cut out your fabric

Place your rectangular pattern cut out onto your fabric and trace it out, remember to add on a centimeter (or about half an inch) for a seam allowance. Next, repeat the same process with the triangular pattern. For both patterns, the bottom edge can be traced without the seam allowance. In the end, you should have six triangles and six rectangles.

Finally, cut out a waist piece that is about 90% of your waist circumference. In my case, my waist measurement was 66 centimeters, so the waist piece I cut out was about 60 centimeters.

How to make a godet skirt

Prepare the fabric

Take a rectangle and triangle and place them together, right sides touching. Then, pin along the edge to connect the two pieces. Repeat that until all of the triangles and rectangles are paired off. Next, sew the pinned edges together.

Build the skirt

Now that you have six identical pieces, you need to put them together to build the skirt. Start with two pieces and place them together, right sides touching. Then, pin along the edge. Next, add another piece of fabric, until all six pieces are connected. Finally, close the skirt by connecting the first and last pieces. Sew along all the pinned edges.

Attach the waist piece

Take the waist piece and fold it in half, sew along the edge to create a circle. Next, use a ruler to divide your circle into six equal parts and align each marking with a seam. Slip the waist piece onto the skirt, the wrong side touching the right side, and pin to secure. Sew along the edges to attach the waist piece to the body of the skirt.

Hem the waist

Turn the skirt right side out and double-fold the waist to create a hem. Pin to secure. Once the waistline is completely pinned, sew along the edge to finish.
