How to Wear Color With Color

One of the most common things I hear as a style coach is, "I'd love to wear more color but I just don't know how." And I get it. Wearing a new color or pairing colors together when you normally dress in neutrals can feel a little intimidating. So I'm breaking it down for you in this post, step-by-step.

Let's get colorful!

Wearing color together doesn't have to be tricky. An easy style hack is pairing colors together that are in the same shade family.

Right about now you're probably wondering what the heck I mean by that so let's use my outfit above as an example.

While these aren't colors you might think about wearing all in one look, they work together because they're each:

  • bright
  • bold
  • saturated

Let's break down that last one because it's the key to how all these intense colors work so well together.

Saturated is the shade variant of a color. A saturated color means it's bright, full and free from of a mixture of white, i.e., not toned down.

Typically saturated colors are bright, bold and loud. In other words, so much fun to wear, especially together, for a statement-making look.

Other shade variants that work well together are:

Pastels - soft, muted shades (like the picture above)

Primary colors - red, blue, yellow

Earth tones - rich and deep colors with a brownish hue

Jewel tones - gemstone inspired colors

Oops, I almost forgot one - any damn colors you feel like wearing together (because style is oh-so-much more fun when you break the rules! :-)
