If you’re wondering how to make a mesh skirt, then I have an easy tutorial for you. No pattern needed even. Just grab one of your favorite fitting skirts and get sewing. I opted for a white skirt because it really goes with everything, but feel free to be more daring by choosing a lovely bold color; just make sure the mesh and the lining fabric are the same color. Now that we have the basic idea out the way, I’d love to show you how easy this DIY mesh skirt is to make. Let’s do this!

Tools and materials:

  • 1 yard mesh fabric
  • 1 yard stretch jersey fabric
  • A pencil skirt that fits
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Chalk
  • Elastic
  • Tape measure
  • Sewing machine

Cut the mesh fabric

Starting with the mesh fabric, place your skirt on a folded fabric and cut around, leaving ¼ seam allowance.

Once the fabric is cut, pin the two pieces.

Cut the lining

Place your pinned mesh piece on the lining jersey fabric. Cut along the outline, but make it a little shorter in length; so that your mesh fabric is longer than the lining as this is the look you want to achieve. Simply fold part of the bottom mesh skirt back and cut along the fold.

How to sew a mesh skirt

Pin the lining and sew both skirts

Just as you did with the mesh fabric, pin the two pieces together and stitch the lining with a zigzag stitch. Next, stitch the mesh fabric together too.

Attach the lining to the skirt

Insert the lining in the mesh fabric, line up the side seams, and pin together. Start pinning close to the tip of the skirt. Turn the skirt inside out when you’re done. Next, using a zigzag stitch, stitch the lining to the mesh fabric all around the waistline. Remember to sew very close to the edge of the skirt as possible.

Basic mesh skirt

With the skirt still turned inside out, make a neat fold and pin in place. Next stitch all around, making sure to leave a gap so that you can insert the elastic.

TIP-

When making the fold, try your skirt on first to make sure it fits.

Sew a mesh skirt

Insert the elastic

Measure the elastic around your waist, making it a little smaller and tighter than usual. Next, cut the desired length and insert it through the gap. Stitch the gap afterward.

Hem the skirt

Once your elastic is fed through the gap and the gap is stitched close, now you can focus on the hem. Fold your hem once and stitch all around.

We’re done! Wasn’t that quick and easy? I told you so! I love the feel and look of the mesh, it gives my skirt more texture. This simple mesh skirt surely goes a long way considering it took about 15 minutes to sew. Now that you know how to make a mesh skirt, will you be making more?
