It’s also beginner-friendly, so you don’t need to have much experience in sewing in order to make a wrap dress. Pick a fun printed fabric, get your tools ready, and pull out your sewing machine because we are about to get stylin’!

Tools and materials:

  • 1.5 metres (59 inches) knit fabric

Get the pattern

First thing’s first, you will need a pattern for this dress. I am using the same pattern that I used in my previous video, which was for a one-shoulder dress. Get the details here, and when you are done making your pattern, then move onto step 2.

Sew a wrap dress

Position fabric and cut out pieces

Fold your fabric, lay your pattern over, and cut out two pieces for the front part. Use a slight seam allowance, don’t cut right on the pattern’s edge.

Optional Adjust the neckline

I felt the neckline was too high for me, so I went ahead and adjusted the fabric, cutting a deeper groove in the curve on top. Do the same for the second piece.

How to sew a wrap dress

Cut your back fabric

Fold your material in half. Next, take the same pattern that you used for the front and fold it in half. Place the pattern on the fold and cut out your back piece.

Pin the side seams and sew

I took both front and back pieces, placed them right sides together, and pinned the sides. Sew along the sides and repeat for the other side.

Casual wrap dress

Cut and sew the binding and strap pieces

Cut your binding pieces and strap pieces from the same fabric of the dress. Cut your binding pieces at 2 inches wide, and the straps at 1 inch wide. There’s no set measurement for the length but make it as long as you can.

If you don't want an exposed binding, sew it on the right side of the fabric. If you want it exposed, go ahead and attach it to the underside.

Fold your binding

Now, fold the binding towards the front of the dress. Roll it over, and pin. This takes a little time but you will get it right! By doing this, the edges of the dress won’t be exposed, giving the seams a neater look. Once done, topstitch the fold as close as you can to the edge.

Make the straps

Fold the straps inwards, so the edges are not visible, and stitch.

Pin and sew the straps

Pin the back strap to the dress by measuring 4 inches from the side seam. Repeat on the other side and sew on the front sides, too.

Attach the wrap strip

For the front wrap strip, pin it right on top of where the dress starts and sew to secure it in place.

I love how this turned out, it sits just right and gives off a lovely edge with the wrap-around effect. Also, don’t be shy with the bold print and colors, it makes the dress that much more interesting! This is seriously an easy wrap dress that anyone can make- no excuses!
