Today, I'm going to show you a stunning (and simple) transformation; how to alter a dress to a women’s bodysuit. That’s right, it sounds complicated but it really takes no time to sew a women’s bodysuit. This is also an amazing way to upcycle your old, unwanted clothes. So, if you have an old, bodycon dress lying around taking unnecessary space in your closet, then this tutorial is just for you!

Tools and materials:

  • Pen
  • Old dress
  • Bodysuit or underwear
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
Sew a bodysuit

Lay out your fashion items

Get a bodysuit that fits you well and lay it on top of your dress.

If you don't own a bodysuit, you can substitute this with a pair of underwear.

Sew a women’s bodysuit

Cut the dress

Using the bodysuit as an outline, cut the back shape of the bodysuit, as shown.

Next, cut the front to size, so sitch the dress over, with the seam on the side, and lay your bodysuit on top. Now you can re-align the front so that the crotch area does not have excess fabric. Be careful not to be scissor-happy here as you may cut through to the back.

DIY women’s bodysuit

Cut out the strips on both sides.

Sew and hem

Now, take your two crotch edges and sew around the crotch seam with a straight line. If you want to, you can add a snap here, but because the neckline of my dress is pretty wide I decided that I didn't need one here.

Then, fold around the leg area and hem around.

Yes, that’s it. Easy as 1, 2, 3! Only 3 simple steps for this lovely transformation. Now you know how to sew a women’s bodysuit in no time!
