How to Make Oversized Boucle Scrunchies

I don’t know about you but I keep seeing two new trends everywhere! Firstly scrunchies, well not just scrunchies, these have been popular for a year or so now…but oversized scrunchies seem to be the new trend, and I am very much enjoying them during lockdown for easy up-dos.

Secondly boucle fabric, originally popular in the 1940’s this delightful fabric is making a come back in homewares! Boucle is french for ‘looped’ and the fibres in the material are curled, making it super durable and comfy. I bought some pink boucle fabric, to cover a foot stool and had some spare, hence this blog post.

What You Will Need

  • Boucle fabric 25x20cm (9.8×7.8 inches)
  • Sewing machine
  • Elastic – 25cm in length (9.8 inches)
  • Sewing thread and needle

How to Make

This hair scrunchie is really easy to make and you don’t have to be sewing pro to create it, trust me, my sewing skills do not stretch much further than straight lines. Cut a piece of material to 25cm wide and 20cms high.

With the right side of the material on the inside, fold the material in half on the shortest side so you have a long 25x10cm shape, sew along the longest open edge to form a tube. Turn the material the right way round so the boucle is now on the outside.

Cut a piece of elastic to 25cms and pass it down the inside of the tube, tie with a strong knot at the end.

Place one end of the open tube inside the other open tube, the material too thick to pass though my sewing machine so I used hand-sewing to join the ends together. The great thing about this material is it hides rough ends and any dodgy sewing really well, I couldn’t even see where I had sewn.

And there you go, one oversized scrunchie perfect for every day use, lazy hair days and keeping your hair out your face when cleansing. I love the soft and interesting fabric and will definitely use boucle for more DIY projects. If you haven’t googled boucle homewares do it now, you won’t regret it. I look forward to seeing more oversized scrunchies on my social feed.
