DIY ruffle wrap skirt

Fold and mark

To start this basic ruffle wrap skirt, I folded the fabric in half twice. I measured the skirt’s desired length and then drew a straight line across the fabric to mark the top and bottom edges.

Cut

Then I cut the fabric.

Measure, mark, and cut

Next, I unfolded the fabric once and measured and marked the length of my waist. To calculate your waist size, see the instructional text at 1:27 in the video.

Then I drew a diagonal line from the waistline to the bottom edge of the skirt and cut the fabric along that line.

Fold and pin

Next, I opened the fabric and turned it so the right side was facing up. I folded one diagonal edge of the skirt inwards 15 centimeters (6 inches).

Then I folded the second side of the skirt over the first and pinned down the top third.

How to make a ruffle wrap skirt

Create darts

I arranged the fabric so the opening would be at the front of the skirt, centered over one leg. I inserted pins on the sides of the skirt to hold everything in place and then flipped the skirt so the back was facing me.

On the top edge of the back of the skirt, I created two darts, 2 centimeters (¾ of an inch) wide and 13 centimeters (5 inches) long.

I did the same on the front of the skirt, on the wide side of the fabric, to the left of the opening.

Create a facing and overlock the edges

To create a facing, I laid my skirt on top of a wide piece of fabric, about a third of the length of the skirt, right sides facing each other, and sewed across the top edge of the skirt. I trimmed the excess fabric from the top and sides of the skirt and snipped the seam allowance all along the top edge. Finally, I serged the edges all around the skirt, and around the edges of the facing.

Cut a curved line

Once the edges were finished, I folded the skirt in half and cut a curved line along the opening edge.

Make ruffles

I cut six wide strips of fabric and hemmed the edges of each one. Then I ran one long edge of each strip through the sewing machine, using a wide, straight stitch. I did not backstitch at the beginning or the end, so I could pull the threads and bunch up the fabric to create ruffles.

Pin and sew

I pinned the ruffles to the skirt in an asymmetrical design and then sewed them in place.

Sew down the facing

I flipped the facing over the front of the skirt, so the right sides of the fabric were facing each other, and sewed the sides of the facing to the sides of the skirt. Once it was sewn down, I flipped the fabric right side out again.

Sew buttonholes and buttons

To complete this easy ruffle wrap skirt, I decided where the buttons and buttonholes should be, and then sewed everything in its proper place.

And here’s the outcome! I am in love with this skirt and I can’t wait to style it.
