Two Fun Retro Ways to Wear a Bucket Hat

The bucket hat has come in and out of fashion for the past several decades. Originally designed for its practicality to keep the rain and sun off of fishermen, designers and music artists elevated the hat to a fashion statement over the years. Here are two fun retro ways to wear a bucket hat.

1960s-Inspired Bucket Hat Look

The 1960s youthquake movement brought the invention of the miniskirt and casual styles. The bucket hat fit right into the spirit that draws some of its inspiration from the roaring 1920s dropped waistline designs and cloche hats. I styled this navy bucket hat in a monochrome look with a matching navy vintage 1960s drop-waist mini dress for a carefree summertime outfit. You can get this look by pairing the hat with any mini dress or mini skirt for a groovy '60s vibe.

1990s BritPop-Inspired Bucket Hat Look

The early 1990s saw a huge revival of the bucket hat from British bands such as the Stone Roses and Oasis from the late '80s "Madchester" raves and the  Acid House scene to the mid-'90s BritPop wave (which I personally loved!) In America, the Hip-Hip scene also adopted the bucket hat as a must-have seen on acts such as Run-D.M.C. and LL Cool J. The Kongol brand bucket hat was the logo to wear for the decade.

I put together a BritPop-inspired look with an A-line mini skirt, white tank, bandanna neckerchief, vintage Keds sneakers and vintage Lambretta jumper with stripe sleeves since BritPop pulled a lot from 1960's scooter culture. Many BritPop kids wore athletic wear that closely identified with the soccer teams Manchester United and Manchester City. You can create this throwback look with any athleisure wear and a t-shirt (preferably with a smiley face on it!icon ) Then get ready to dance!

Contemporary Bucket Hat Look

If you're not feeling nostalgic, today's music stars like  Rihanna are bringing the bucket hat back again. But you don't have to be a pop star to rock it. You can wear bucket hats with pretty much any outfit. They're ideal for casual summer looks to keep the sun off your face and give you a little style. Pair it will some casual cropped pants and a light blazer, a sundress or wear one with your poolside shorts and swimsuits. The bucket hat may never truly go out of style!

Now that you know how to style a bucket hat, how will you wear it?
