In this tutorial, I'm going to be showing you how to make a ruched skirt using a ruched mini skirt pattern. It's actually the same pattern I used to make my ruched mini dress, but I modified the pattern to make it a mini skirt.

This is a super-easy sewing tutorial and I hope you enjoy it. Let's get started!

Tools And Materials

The pattern is available in six different sizes, sizes 32-42.

Modifying the sewing pattern for the ruched skirt

1. Modify the pattern

Since I tweaked the pattern for this mini skirt, you can do that yourself by lining the front and back parts together at the bottom, focusing on the waistline.

I estimated how high or low I wanted the skirt waistline to be and then, I added 4cm (1.5inches) of allowance to it. These 4cm (1.5 inches) are going to serve as cover for the elastic waistband.

Cutting the mini skirt pattern

When I was sure I had the desired length, I cut the pattern length.

Now, my pattern was in three main pieces; the front, the back, and the strings for the drawstrings later on.

Folding the hems

2. Sew the mini skirt

Now on to sewing. I pinned down the hems, making use of the 2cm (0.8 inches) allowance for folding. I sewed both the front and back pieces separately with folded hems.

After folding, I lay the front and back pieces on top of one another, right sides facing. Then, I pinned and sewed the side seams.

3. Create the drawstring channels

Next, I opened the seam allowance flat on both side seams of the skirt to create channels for the drawstrings. I sewed the channels at the edge of the seams.

4. Make & insert the drawstrings

Moving on to the drawstrings, I folded the strips right sides together and sewed using a zigzag stitch.

Turning the strips over using a loop turner

After I was done sewing, I turned the fabric over using a loop turner.

Next, I inserted the drawstrings into the skirt's drawstring channels.

At about 8cm (3 inches) from the upper edge of the fabric, I stopped inserting the drawstrings and held them down with pins.

Next, I sewed across to stop the drawstring from pulling out.

Making a waistband for the mini skirt

5. Make the waistband for the skirt

Lastly, I took my 4cm-wide (1.5 inches) elastic band and laid it on the pattern to know what length I would need.

Remember that there should be 2cm (0.8 inches) of seam allowance on each side and the elastic band should only have a 1cm (0.4 inches) seam allowance.

Cutting the elastic for the waistband

Then, I cut the length of the elastic band I needed out.

Sewing the ends of the elastic band together

Next, I sewed the edges of the elastic band together.

Pinning the waistband to the skirt

Then, I pinned it to the edge fo the skirt.

Attaching the elastic band to the skirt

I sewed both edges together using a zigzag stitch. Don't forget to hide the blade if you're using an overlocker so as not to damage the elastic.

Folding the elastic waistband

Next, I folded the upper part of the skirt with the elastic inward and immobilized the elastic by sewing it down on both sides.
