So I went to the thrift store the other day and found a whole bunch of clothing. Honestly, the whole trip is a bit of a blur, but one thing I clearly remember is finding this fantastic pink denim midi skirt, that I very much want to turn into a mini skirt. I know I’m going to screw this up somehow, but the good news is you, dear reader, are going to learn from my mistakes. So if you would like to follow along as I attempt to make a DIY mini skirt, keep reading!

Make a DIY mini skirt

How to make a DIY mini skirt

Measure and mark

The first step was to establish how short I wanted to make this skirt. I measured the length of a mini skirt I already own and decided to make the pink skirt the same length. Then I flipped the skirt inside out, measured and marked the length I wanted, and drew a straight line across where I would cut it.

Cut

Next, I cut my skirt on the line I had just drawn.

Measure and mark

Once it was cut to size, I turned the skirt so the side seams were in the middle. I wanted my skirt to be tighter towards the top and looser around the hips. So, I measured one inch from the side seam at the top of the skirt and marked it. Then I measured 1½ inches from the seam in the center of the skirt and 2 inches from the seam towards the bottom of the skirt. Then I connected all the marks with a straight line. And then I repeated this process on the other side of the skirt.

Fold and sew

I folded the skirt so the line I marked was aligned with the side seam. Then I sewed along the line. I screwed this step up a little bit by not sewing a straight line, so I did have to pick out some of the stitching and resew it. I’m going to blame this mistake on the fact that I was starving and really wanted a panini. So, don’t sew when you’re hungry, and you won’t have a problem sewing a straight line.

Hem

To finish, I just flipped up the bottom edge about ½ an inch and sewed it down. Then I topstitched around the hem on the right side of the fabric to give it a nice, finished look.

And this is the final product. I really like how this transformation turned out. It fits great, the color is awesome, and I think I look pretty fine, if I may say so myself. I hope you enjoyed this DIY mini skirt tutorial. Let me know what you think of this transformation, and how you would style this skirt.
