Create a summer staple Sun Hat with a simple woven placemats. It's cheap and cheerful - you can't go wrong!

I needed a sunhat with a wide brim and when I nipped into my local grocery store and saw the placemat, I thought I could create something out of it. The material is very identical to a hat I already owned.

Sun Hat

I started by unravelling the placemats until I have enough circumference left to form the crown of the hat.

Then I took it to the sewing machine to start working on the crown of the hat.

I overlapped the strands, placed it under the needle so that both strands are caught when sewing. It could be useful (easier even) to use a zig zag stitch but I used a longest straight stitch settings on my machine. The needle is a universal 90.

To form the curve, I flipped the crown of the hat up towards the sewing machine and I pulled the strand a little tighter when sewing. Then I continued to sew until finished using the first placemat. It was just enough to complete this part of the hat.

Progress

Next I started work on the brim of the hat

I started by overlapping the second strand of the placemat to where the first one ended and I continued sewing. This time I sewed flat to allow the brim to take shape. I continued until I was satisfied with the width of the brim

Sun Hat

I stopped after adding the third placemat. The brim was wide enough for me at that point.

I then cut out a piece of lining material for the sweatband and sew it to the hat. This is very much optional.

I also added a few accessories to the outside of the hat.

I glued on a one meter rope using a hot glue gun and made a bow out of a net fabric.

Final Product

And this is the final result! I think it's beautiful even if I do say so myself. Bring on the BBQs! I think I will be making more of this in different colours.

If you have any of these placemats lurking around in the house, why not turn them into a beautiful sun hat :)
