As soon as I saw the BHMPatternDesigners challenge on Instagram, I knew I had to make something. This challenge is to celebrate and highlight black pattern designers and fabric companies during Black History Month. I decided to make the Janelle Skirt by Style Sew Me Patterns. I think I met Eryn from Style Sew Me Patterns in 2014 or 2015 at one of Mimi G Style’s conferences she used to host in LA. Shortly after meeting, she started posting amazing “how to” videos on YouTube and and I started using her videos all the time! From installing invisible zippers to making a pleated skirt, she’s got you covered. Fast forward to today and Eryn has an amazing successful pattern line. I have the majority of her patterns, but sad to say I’ve only made two other Style Sew Me Pattern. Back in 2017 I made the Anitra Jumpsuit, which you can read about HERE. Last year I did a collaboration with Andrea from Andrea Naturally I believe the Janelle Skirt was one of her first patterns and I’ve been wanting to make it forever! I FINALLY got around to making it and I LOVE IT!

The Janelle is a form fitting skirt faux wrap skirt that fits just right. Like, I am seriously in love with the fit and I think this will be my skirt sloper because it fits so well. I made a size Large based on my body measurements. You can choose to shorten the skirt and you also have full control on just how high you want that split to go. Ayyeee! lol The fabric I chose is a stretch black denim I picked up at Walmart in a 4 yard bundle for $4! I KNOW!

Can we also get into my sweatshirt? I know you guys have seen it before HERE. I purposely paired these two garments together since I purchased this sweatshirt from Daniela Tabois, who is a black designer. I started following Daniela on YouTube a long time ago as well. Here I decided to change up my earrings and boots for a little bit of a different look. Gray and black can be dark colors, but adding a pop of red just sets off the look. The earrings are from XTRA By Stacy and the red booties are from Caribbean Cowgirl on Instagram. I also wore these red booties HERE. You’ve also seen the Rhinestone Bougie Sweatshirt HERE.

I know I’ll be making this skirt again because it’s just such a quick sew. I made this skirt in 1 evening AND you only need 2 yards of fabric. I would like a shorter one in an Ankara fabric.
