Today I’m going to show you how to make a DIY sun hat out of three round placemats and a few little accessories for decoration. This project is fun and easy, and the result is fabulous. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Three round, braided placemats
  • Seam ripper
  • Rope
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun
  • Tulle fabric
  • Satin fabric (optional)
  • Sewing machine

Unravel

To begin, use a seam ripper to cut the stitching on the placemat. Once the first few stitches are cut, it should be simple to pull the rest of the stitching out and unravel the spiral. Wrap the unraveled cord around a box or piece of cardboard to prevent it from getting tangled up.

How to make a DIY sun hat

Leave the center of one of the placemats intact, once it’s reached about 6 inches in diameter. This will be the base of your hat.

Sew

Start sewing the braiding back around the base of the hat. Make sure the braiding overlaps with the braiding on the previous spiral, and hold the base of the hat vertically so the edges don’t expand outwards, but rather downwards.

Expand the brim

Once the crown of the hat is a good size, start sewing the braiding flat (while still overlapping with the previous spiral) to create the brim.

Add a band

This is optional, but if you’d like, you can cut a strip of fabric the same length as the diameter of the hat, and sew it inside right above the brim.

Add accessories

Add accessories like rope and a bow. I used a glue gun to attach a rope, wrapped twice around the hat.

I also made a bow by gathering some tulle and tying it in the middle with thread. I hand-sewed the bow onto the hat.

From placemat to movie star hat! I am so impressed with how this turned out. Did you find this DIY sun hat tutorial helpful? Let me know in the comments.
