Read on to learn more about the ingredients and how to make this homemade matcha clay mask!

What are the benefits of a powder mask?

I have oily combination skin with occasional flares of hormonal acne in the lower parts of my face (btw, this  rhassoul clay mask always helps me to clear that up). I love masking and usually apply quite a few different masks throughout a month.

Since my skin is also sensitive to many store-bought products, I often go the DIY route and create my own purifying DIY face masks with natural ingredients at home. And while I enjoy masks with fresh ingredients (e.g. this  avocado mask), the water content makes them highly perishable.

Enter this homemade matcha green tea clay mask. Looking at the ingredients list, you can see that we only need dry ingredients and that means this powdered clay mask can be stored for up to 6 months or a year if you skip the milk powder.

You have it at hand whenever you want to treat your skin with a DIY face mask. All you have to do is mix the powder with a splash of liquid and then apply to your face.

What ingredients are in this DIY matcha clay mask?

My all natural homemade mud mask is formulated with French green clay, kaolin clay, matcha, goat milk powder, dried honey, and spirulina powder. The clays absorb excess oil and environmental toxins from the skin, while the other ingredients help to nourish and moisturize the skin. Here is everything you need to know about the ingredients in this detox mask and their benefits:

French green clay

French green clay is rich in trace minerals that nourish the skin. It clears impurities and absorbs excess oil from the skin. This clay packs a punch on acne, blemishes, and blackheads. It can help to tighten pores and overall rejuvenate the skin. French clay is made up of centuries-old plant matter, which give them its signature green color, and contains iron oxide that draws out toxins from the skin.

Kaolin clay

Kaolin clay is finely-textured and gentle to skin as it is less absorbing than French green clay. If you have sensitive, dry skin, I recommend to double the amount of kaolin clay in the recipe and leave out the French green clay.

Matcha powder

Matcha is made from leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Since the leaves aren’t heated but dry naturally, Matcha’s antioxidants and nutrients are better preserved. Matcha has anti-bacterial and antibiotic properties, and its antioxidants help to rejuvenate skin cells, reduce fine lines, and promote smooth, supple skin.

Goat milk powder

Goat milk powder is rich in vitamins, particularly vitamins D and A, some of the most important vitamins for the skin, and nourishing minerals. This powder also contains linoleic acid, which supports the skin structure, and other essential fatty acids that are very moisturizing and help to even out the skin tone.

You can also substitute this ingredient with  yoghurt powder.

Honey powder

Honey powder has anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties that can soothe inflammation, while its anti-oxidants strengthen the skin and support cell regeneration. As a natural humectant, honey powder traps moisture in the skin and adds a shine to your complexion.

Aloe vera powder

Aloe vera powder is freeze-dried aloe vera gel and has the same benefits as the gel but in a much higher concentration. Aloe vera improves acne and blemishes. It is hygroscopic, meaning it helps the skin to absorb and retain moisture from the surrounding air.

Spirulina powder

Spirulina powder, which is a form of algae, is very high in nutrients, protein and antioxidants, which are essential to achieving a fresh and glowy complexion. Spirulina deeply nourishes the skin, and its amino acids help to promote cell growth and regeneration.

Allantoin

Allantoin is another active moisturizing ingredient and also promotes healing and repair of the skin.

What liquids can I use to activate this homemade clarifying face mask?

To use this powdered clay mask, it needs to be mixed with a liquid. This also allows you to control the portion size and only use what you need. You also don’t have to add any preservatives to mask. You can choose between different liquids, and I have listed a few suggestions below:

Water

You can never go wrong with water. It’s widely available and brings out all the benefits this clarifying clay mask already has. Water is suitable for all skin types.

Green tea

Using  green tea  will further boost the antioxidants in the mask and fight premature skin ageing. The tannins in green tea, which are naturally astringed molecules, act as tonner and help to shrink pores, reduce sebum production and even out the appearance of the skin.

Aloe vera gel

If your skin feels very dry, use  aloe vera gel to mix the clay mask. This natural humectant attracts moisture from the air and provides deep moisturizing, which strengthens the elasticity of the skin. Your skin will appear smoother and more supple.

Glycerin

Glycerin is another emollient that draws in moisture from the surrounding air, acting similar to aloe vera. It can be used on all skin types and is suitable for oily skin conditions and mature skin.

Hydrosols

Hydrosols or hydrolats are an excellent choice for sensitive, mature, or oily skin and clogged pores. These floral waters are calming, anti-inflammatory, astringent, and toning.  Lavender hydrosol is excellent for treating acne-prone skin, while  rose water  feels cooling and helps to restore the skin’s ph levels.

Yoghurt

If you don’t mind using an animal product, activate the clay mask with  yoghurt. The good bacteria and lactic acid in yoghurt help to tighten pores, dissolve dead skin, and are beneficial the anti-ageing process. Yoghurt also helps with acne, eczema, and rosacea, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Enhance the facial mask with essential oils

When adding the liquids, you can also add the following essential oils to boost the effects of the green tea mud mask. These plant-based oils can enhance and improve the appearance and feel of your skin.

More helps more certainly isn’t true for using essential oil in homemade skin care products. So keep the dosage low and only add 1 to 2 drops EO for every 2 teaspoons of the powder mask mix.

And please be sure only to use high-quality essentials oils that are indented for use in skin care.

If you have very sensitive or irritated skin, skip the essentials oils to avoid further irritation.

Essential oils for green tea face mask
  • Roman Chamomile is very soothing to the skin and has potent anti-inflammatory properties, making it a good choice to treat inflamed and itchy skin, psoriasis, razor burns, or hives.
  • Tea Tree is a great essential oil for a number of skin problems, including acne and sebum regulation, or small cuts and wounds. When topically applied, this essential oil can reduce puffiness and helps scratchy, itchy skin.
  • Clary Sage is a useful essential for those who battle with stress-related eczema, excessive sebum production, as well as for mature skin and wrinkles.
  • Carrot Seed may not smell the nicest, but its high carotol content promotes skin healing and is beneficial for dry and chapped skin, acne, as well as blackheads and whiteheads. Do not use this oil when you are pregnant or nursing.
  • Helichrysum is a higher priced essential oil, and its unique, curry-like smell won’t be everyone’s favourite. But helichrysum is a good option for mature and dry skin. This oil can help to reduce bruises, scars, rosacea, and broken capillaries.

To use the mask, put 2 teaspoons of the mask powder into a small mixing bowl and stir in 1 teaspoon liquid. Stir until you have a smooth paste. Using a brush or spatula, apply the mask to your face.
