1. Modify the skirt

As I mentioned, I got this skirt at a thrift store. It needed some modifications, including length. I will show you how to quickly shorten the length of the skirt without a sewing machine.

Cutting the skirt and the lining

First, mark your desired length with a marker. Next, cut the skirt to your desired length, following the mark as a guide.

You’ll notice my skirt has a lining too, and if that’s the case with yours, simply fold the main fabric up and cut the lining accordingly so that it doesn’t peek out from the bottom.

Marking the skirt slit

My skirt had a slit at the back, but the slit is no longer visible because I shortened the length. So, I added a mark to the side of the skirt, as shown. This will be my new side slit. Go ahead and cut the side to create a slit and give your skirt a little more detail.

Hemming the skirt with E6000 glue

2. Hem the skirt

So, since I don't have a sewing machine, I decided to hem the skirt and give it a lovely finishing touch by gluing the raw edges. I used E6000 glue for this. Basically, I put glue right on the edges and fold it over. This is a brilliant hack should you also not own a sewing machine.

Wait for the glue to dry before proceeding to the next step.

3. Add the rhinestones

Bling time! This hack is pretty easy, too. Grab your string rhinestones, and let’s get to it!

Measure the front part of the skirt from seam to seam. This should give you a good estimation of how long and short the rhinestone string should be. Next, cut seven strips, with the first being the longest and the last being the shortest, almost like a gradient by size effect. Line them up when you’re done.

Sewing the rhinestone chains

Next, with a needle and matching thread, sew the shortest strip first. Sew the ends to either side of the skirt’s seam. Then, repeat the process for the rest of the rhinestone chains.
