Create the pattern

Take a disposable facemask and fold it in half. Then, place it on some paper and trace an outline. Remember to leave about a centimeter of space above and below for the seams, and five centimeters behind.

Facemask pattern

Draw a small curve on the top and cut out your pattern (following the curve). Finally, cut out your fabric (two sides).

Prepare the lining

Take your two pieces of fabric and place them right sides together. Then, cut out two new pieces of fabric following the original pattern with three centimeters taken off the back.

Sew a scarf facemask

Align both pairs of fabric right sides together and sew along the front.

How to sew a scarf facemask

Connect the lining

Next, hem the lining by folding the sides in and sewing. Once that is done, attach the lining to the facemask. Place the lining on the facemask, right sides together, and sew the top and bottom edges.

Hem the sides

Pull the mask through to turn in right side out and hem the sides. Double fold the sides until it meets the lining and then sew closed - do not attach it to the lining.

Add the straps

Make the straps

Pin a safety pin through your elastic and push it through the hem of your mask. Repeat on the other side. Next, tie the ends of the elastic to form a strap.

Create the scarf

Take a 50cm x 50cm (20 inches) piece of fabric and hem and sew the edges. Next, fold the fabric over to form an uneven triangle. Cut across the top to separate the two triangles. Place the triangles right sides together and sew across the top.

How to make a scarf facemask

Sew a top stitch across the top of the triangles. Next, fold the triangle in half to find and mark the center. Place the center of the bottom edge of the mask on the marked center of the triangle and sew them together.

Love that the lining isn't attached on the sides. Can slip a mask filter inside for those situations that are least safe.
