Cutting out the pattern for the scrunchie headband

1. Cut the pattern

The pattern for this scrunchie headband is really straightforward; measure 10cm x 100cm (3.93” x 39.37”) and cut!

Folding the strip in half and marking

Fold the whole strip in half widthways. Measure 6cm (2.36”) from one edge and make a mark.

Measuring the marking the pattern

Then, measure 2.5cm (0.98”) down on the shortened and make a mark.

Next, cut out the edge of the short end, starting from the 2.5cm (0.98”) mark and ending at the 6cm (2.36”) mark.

Snipping the edges symmetrically

Fold the folded strip in half, lengthwise, and cut the other edge following the first cut-out. Like this, the edges of your DIY scrunchie headband will be symmetrical.

Sewing the raw edges closed

2. Sew the ends

Now, go ahead and sew the raw edges, starting â…“ way from the short ends and working your way down to the ends.

Leaving a gap in the fabric

Be sure not to sew the area shown. So, start sewing again from that 5cm (1.96”) gap.

Turn the fabric right sides through the 5cm (1.96”) gap. This is what you should have.

Gluing white ribbon to the headband

3. Glue ribbon to the headband

I had a black headband, and since my linen is white, I didn't want any black peeking out from underneath. If this is the case with your DIY scrunchie headband, then cover it up with a white ribbon.

All you need is a hot glue gun. Simply wrap the ribbon around the headband as you glue along.

Scrunching the white linen fabric

4. Scrunch the fabric

Ok, here’s the fun part of this scrunchie headband tutorial; putting it all together! Insert the end of the headband through the 5cm (1.96”) gap. Push the fabric through while simultaneously scrunching it up.

Stitching the gap closed

When the whole headband is in the tunnel, go ahead and stitch the 5cm (1.96”) gap closed.

Cleaning up the ends

5. Clean up the ends

Fold the excess fabric over the ends of the headband. Be sure to do this tightly. One edge should overlap the other. This has to be neat, so take your time with this step.

Stitch the folds closed, making sure you go through both layers. Hold the fabric with your other hand while stitching to ensure a tight fit.
