Those little snap hair clips are the best, but they’re not very stylish. You can fix that with this tutorial for DIY snap clip covers. Use fabric to make snap clip covers to coordinate with all your outfits and wait for your friends to ask where you got these fabulous clips!

This is a great use for your scrap fabric because you need so little for each snap clip cover.

Tools and materials:

  • 7-centimeter (2.8-inch) snap clips
  • 2 millimeter thick (0.08-inch) soft foam
  • Needle and thread
  • Scrap flannel or felt fabric
  • Scrap cotton fabric
  • Pencil
  • Glue (+ glue gun optional)
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
How to make snap clip covers

1. Trace the shape

Trace the outline of your snap clip onto your soft foam, flannel or felt, and cotton fabric.

Cutting out the pieces

2. Cut out the shapes

Cut out four shapes (two foam, one flannel/felt, and one fabric), adding a very small allowance on the cotton fabric.

Hand-sewing a basting stitch

3. Sew a basting stitch

Hand-sew a basting stitch ½ centimeter (0.2-inches) from the edge all around the cotton fabric piece. Leave a long thread at the end of the basting.

4. Glue the foam to the clip

Apply glue to the top of the clip and attach a foam piece.

Pulling on the basting stitch

5. Add the fabric cover

Insert the snap clip in the cotton fabric piece, with the foam top against the fabric.

Pull on the loose basting thread of the cotton fabric to gather the edges of it around the bottom of the clip. Make sure the snap part of the clip doesn’t get trapped in the fabric.

6. Add the second foam piece

Cut a 1-centimeter (0.4-inch) slit in the foam piece at the spot where the attached end of the snap meets the clip. Thread the snap through that slit.

Gluing the felt to the under side of the snap clip

7. Add the flannel or felt

Position the flannel or felt so that it lays flat on the fabric and covers all the fabric edges. Then glue the felt piece into place.

Using tweezers to adjust the DIY snap clip covers

Use a pair of tweezers to help you get the edges of the fabric tucked under the felt as you are gluing down the felt. When you are done gluing, you can also use your tweezers to wipe up any excess glue.
