The DIY Bow Scrunchie

by The Hemming

Make yourself a cute DIY bow scrunchie in very early preparation for summer!

This scrunchie is designed to be made from scrap and left over fabrics. You can also use thrifted garments or bedsheets.

 What you need:

- Paper for pattern

- Non stretch scrap fabric 60cm x 35cm

- 8mm elastic

- Loop turner

- Ruler

- Scissors

1. Draw out your pattern piece as above image.

2. The short end of the pattern piece sits on the fold of the fabric. Cut out 2 pieces on the fold.

3. Cut out 1 strip of fabric which is 10cm wide x 50cm long

4. Cut a piece of 8mm elastic at 18cm long and you should now have the above pieces.

5. With right sides together, pin both bow pieces. Sew around fabric pieces stopping with a 9cm gap as shown above. 1cm wide seam allowance.

6. Trim back ends of bow as pictured and snip seam allowance around the curves to allow for an easy turn back.

7. Pull both bow ends out through the gap. Iron edges flat. Iron over the gap section ensuring the 1cm seam allowance is folded inside.

8. Hand sew the 9cm gap shut with a slip stitch, so it is not visible.

9. Iron short ends of fabric strip up 1cm to the wrong side.

10. With right sides together, unfold the ironed edges and pin down long edge of strip. Sew this seam at 1cm.

11. Using a loop turner, turn your piece out the correct way. Iron piece flat with seam on the edge, be careful not to iron over your already ironed up edges.

12. Thread elastic up through fabric tube and pin down at one end. Use the loop turner to go up inside the tube and hook the other end of the elastic, pull through and pin both ends of elastic together.

13. Overlap ends of the elastic by 1cm and use a zig zag stitch to secure elastic ends.

14. Push raw edges of fabric tube inside and overlap one edge of the tube as shown. Sew down, securing both ends of tube and elastic inside.

15. Steam the scrunchie and separate the gathers neatly.

16. Wrap bow around the seam and tie a knot to hide the seam.

All Finished!
