How to Make a Cozy Messy Bun Beanie
This messy bun beanie idea popped up on my Instagram feed. It was a sponsored paid ad, with beanies that had holes in for people to thread through buns or high ponytails. While this is similar to wool or thermal headbands, there is more fabric here to keep your head warm.
So, today, I’m going to show you how to make your own messy bun beanie at home. Let’s jump into the tutorial!
Tools and materials:
- Beanie hat
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Elastic hairband
1. Gather your tools and materials
First off, you’re going to need to gather up an old beanie hat, scissors, a needle and thread, and also an elastic hair band.
For this DIY, I recommend using a thinner knit beanie, as this is much easier to work with.
2. Cut off the end of the beanie hat
To start, I’m going to cut off the end of the hat where the pom-pom is. You now have a tube.
3. Add the hair elastic
Flip this inside out and loosely tie the hair elastic around the new opening that you’ve just created. Fold any excess fabric back.
4. Stitch the hair elastic into place
Then, take the needle and thread and stitch it into place, leaving a small hole for your ponytail to poke through.
Now, flip the hat back the right way out to hide all that ugly mess.
5. Try on the messy bun beanie
Try the beanie on, threading your hair up through the hole. You can style your hair into a bun or leave it as a ponytail.
