In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to add volume to fine hair.

If your hair looks a bit lackluster, fear not! With an ingenious hack, I’ll show you how to transform it from flat to fab with some amazing volume.

Tools and materials:

  • Brush
  • Curling iron
  • Hairspray
  • Bobby pins
  • Dry shampoo
  • Blow dryer
  • Round brush
  • Hair crimper
  • Hair clip
Clipped up hair

1. Clip up hair

Start by washing and blow-drying your hair.

Now, we’re going to create some volume. Clip the top part of your hair up.

Crimping hair

2. Crimp your hair

Don't touch the pieces of hair that are right next to your face. Start to crimp your hair bit by bit.

My hair is super fine, and I’m constantly looking for new ways to create volume.

I used to tease the top of my hair with a brush to give it more volume, but I find that this method is much better.

Spraying roots with dry shampoo

3. Spray with dry shampoo

Then spray the roots with some dry shampoo.

Dry shampoo helps to fix the hair a little bit, but it isn’t as harsh as when you're using hair spray because it doesn’t make your roots stick together.

After putting in dry shampoo, let your hair cool down for a few minutes.

Straightening top part of hair with blow dryer

4. Straighten the top part

Then let the top of your hair down, and you'll be able to see how much extra volume you now have.

Your straight hair on top should cover all of the crimped hair so that you can’t see it.

If, however, you do have some unwanted crimps peeking through, you can fix it with a flat iron or a round brush and a blow dryer.

Curling hair

5. Curl the bottom

Now to create some curls. You can create curls with a round brush, or I prefer to use a big 1.5-inch curling iron.

Use hairspray on every lock to keep the curls in place.

Pinning back the front

6. Pin back the front

You can leave it like this, but I like how it looks with the front pieces of hair put back, so I pinned the hair from the front behind my ears.

Finishing up the hair

7. Finish up hair

Finish up by fixing your hair, seeing if any more of it needs curling, and spraying some more hairspray.

You can add oil mist if you like to add extra shine.

Here is my hair now compared to the look I started with. If you're dreaming about extra volume in your hair, definitely give this technique a try.

Voluminous hairstyle

This voluminous hairstyle is so good to go with feminine outfits, or you can go in the opposite direction, and it can bring some nice contrast to a more urban, masculine look.
