I’m going to show you some great tips to add volume to fine hair. Take your limp, lifeless hair and turn it into a beautiful head of full hair.

These hacks will keep your hair looking full and gorgeous for the entire day.

Tools and materials:

  • Volumizing mousse
  • Volumizing spray
  • Volumizing shampoo
  • Volumizing conditioner
  • Crimper
  • 1 inch rollers
  • Blow dryer
  • Curling iron
  • Brush
  • Wide tooth comb
Washing hair

1. Wash your hair

Hairstylists often tell people to make sure their hair is unwashed before styling, as it helps the style last longer.

This may be true for thick hair but if your hair is fine it’s exactly the opposite. Fine hair will not look good and will not hold if it’s dirty, flat and slept on. If there’s any oil whatsoever in the hair, it’s going to get weighed down.

If you want fine hair to look amazing, you have to start all of your styling steps right from the wash stage.

When you wash your hair you need shampoo and conditioner that caters to volume.

Prepping hair

2. Prep your hair with products

Now we have to prep our hair with products for the blowout.

I recognize that this step can be a little less fun, but if you skip it you will not get the results you are looking for. Products are essential to styling fine hair.

The first product I’m using is a multiplying volume styling mousse. Mousse is a great option for styling fine hair because the fluffy texture is light, but it provides fantastic hold.

Pair the mouse with a multiplying volume styling mist. The one I use is a multitasking treatment styler.

I love products like this because you get tons of benefits in one bottle. The one I’m using provides hair with additional volume, prevents breakage, provides shine and hydration, and makes hair look and feel smooth.

After applying your products, brush them through from roots to ends to evenly distribute them and then you can begin to blow dry.

Blow drying hair with blow out brush

3. Blow drying techniques and tips

Blow your hair out with a blow out brush, lifting the roots up for more volume and using a mohawk sectioning technique at the top.

This is the easiest way to do it and also the way that will give you the absolute best results.

Hair rollers

When you finish, while the hair is still hot, place three large Velcro rollers on that mohawk section just to set the volume in place.

When the hair is cooled down and the rollers are released you can really see how much volume, smoothness and lift you’ve achieved on hair that is not that impressive naturally.

Hair parting

4. Hair parting

Parting your hair in its natural position, which is typically a side part for most people, will give you less volume.

Parting your hair in the middle will give you even less volume because hair is then evenly distributed on both sides. You don’t get that bump of hair on one side of your head when parting down the middle.

If you part your hair using the opposite side of your natural part, you will get a crazy amount of volume.

It’s going to feel weird but just try it before you decide not to do it. It’s the easiest way to get long lasting, amazing volume at the front.

Crimping hair

5. Crimp for volume

When you have fine hair, just going and living your life, walking into humidity, being out and about all day, your volume is going to drop.

A mini crimper is going to be your best solution. This is the best hack ever for getting volume to last in fine hair.

All you have to do is use the crimper to add texture by the roots of your hair. Leave out the top layer to camouflage the crimp.

Work your way around your head section by section and you will be amazed at the volume you get with a micro crimper.

Curling hair

6. Curl for more volume

Now go in and curl the hair to get even more width. I’m using a one inch clamp curling iron for this look.

Clamp at the root and rotate to incorporate the hair.

Then unravel and pull through to straighten out the ends. This creates a modern, super sexy curl shape.

Combing hair

7. Comb through your hair

After the curls have cooled down and set, run a wide tooth comb through them to modernize the look.

The finished results left my hair huge, glossy and bouncy. Best of all it’s not sticky or crunchy at all.

In order to execute this look, it’s really important that you use all of the techniques I described here.
