Today's tutorial is all about aloe vera for hair growth. I'm going to show you how I make my own deep conditioning mask.

Most of you have probably heard of aloe vera, it is nothing new, it is big in the natural hair community. But I'm just going to tell you a few facts about aloe vera before we get into actually using it so that you know exactly why I'm using it for my hair.

The first thing is that aloe vera contains proteolytic enzymes which repair dead skin on your scalp. Because of its gel-like properties it also really absorbs into the hair and conditions it and makes it nice and strong and shiny. It also prevents itching and dandruff.

One of the main things that makes aloe vera so beneficial to your hair is that its properties are very similar to that of keratin which is the same protein that your hair is made out of and because it's got such a similar structure it helps absorb into the hair.

These similar chemical properties as keratin also help strengthen the hair and give it more elasticity which means that your hair doesn’t break really easily.

Another great use of aloe vera is to get rid of build-up on your actual hair shaft it has cleansing properties that will remove the excess sebum on your hair without drying it.

Tools and materials:

  • Aloe vera
  • Knife
  • Spoon
  • Blender
  • Cheesecloth
  • Olive oil
  • Squeezy bottle
  • Hair cap
Removing the aloe vera gel

1. Remove the gel from the leaf

Cut an aloe vera leaf to remove the thorns and the skin. Then slice it down the middle and use a spoon to scoop out the gel from the inside.

Blending the aloe vera gel

2. Blend the gel

Put the gel into a blender and blend it until it gives you a really nice, foamy, watery texture.

Draining the mixture

3. Drain the mixture

Add a little bit of water to the blender and shake it up so that the whole mixture comes out - we don’t want to waste any aloe.

Then drain it in a cheesecloth. Squeeze until every last bit of liquid comes out.

Adding olive oil

4. Add olive oil

Add about a tablespoon and a half of olive oil to the liquid. Then pour that back into the blender and mix it up.

Keep in mind that it's still going to separate after this, but this just helps it blend nicely.

Transfer mixture to a squeezy bottle

5. Transfer to a squeezy bottle

When done, transfer the liquid into a squeezy bottle.

You can clearly see the separation between the aloe and the oil, so just shake it up before use, it will have a gel consistency.

Applying DIY aloe vera hair mask to hair

6. Apply to hair

To apply, section off your hair and put it all over your scalp. I recommend doing this when your hair is slightly damp.

Then run it down the rest of your hair. It will foam up like shampoo. I'm using it basically as a detangler. I’m going to focus on the ends and my hair.

Hair definition

This definition is amazing and much better than the definition I get with my regular conditioner.

Twisting hair

7. Twist your hair and wait

When finished applying all over your hair, twist your hair. Pop on a hair cap and leave your hair for 30 minutes.

When the time has passed, remove all the twists.

Now I haven't combed my hair for one week and I have very little shedding from my entire head. I think because the aloe vera adds so much slip to the hair it reduces the breakage.

This is the final result. My hair has literally never looked this moisturized before, it is very hydrated and shiny.

I am extremely impressed with how this has turned out and will definitely be using aloe vera on my hair in the future.
