How to Make a Super Cozy Beanie With Pom Poms
If you want to DIY your own pom pom beanie without a sewing machine, you’ve come to the right place.
Follow along with this quick, beginner-friendly DIY beanie hat tutorial. Let’s begin!
Tools and materials:
- Pattern paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Stretchy, knit fabric
- Needle and thread
- Straight pins
- 2 pom poms
1. Cut a rectangle
Measure and trace the initial rectangular piece of the beanie pattern using the following measurements: (9.8” x 11.8”)
2. Fold vertically and cut
Fold the resulting rectangle vertically and then trace with a pencil the measurements below.
Then, cut out the curves. (2cm = 0.79” , 10cm = 3.94” , 12cm = 4.72”)
Open it up and this is how your DIY pattern should look at this point:
3. Cut the fabric pieces
Fold two pieces of a stretchy, knit fabric in half and stack them with the folded ends toward you.
Place your pattern piece on top and trace the pattern with tailor's chalk (optional) then cut carefully around the pattern.
When you unfold each fabric piece, this is how they should look:
4. Fold at the notches and sew
After opening the fabric, fold it in half at the notch so that the rounded pieces meet.
Then sew:
You can use a sewing machine if you have one, or hand sew. Repeat for both ends of each fabric piece.
5. Sew the 2 pieces together
Lay the pieces right sides together and pin them with straight pins to secure them.
Then sew all around the perimeter, leaving a small gap of a few inches. Leave a seam allowance of about ½”.
6. Reverse the fabric
Push the fabric through the gap to turn it right side out.
7. Fold the edges of the gap and sew
Fold the edges at the gap inward to match the ½” seam allowance.
Then sew the gap closed.
8. Straighten and fold
Straighten out the seams of the beanie and fold the bottom up, however much you like.
9. Sew on 2 pom poms
Sew on 2 pom poms to the top if you like, or keep the simple DIY beanie as it is.
You can either buy them ready made or make them yourself.
