Skincare routine over 40

1. Sunscreen

First off, a bit of sunscreen. My friend told me off the other day for not using it enough so I’m making sure that I am, and I’m just rubbing that into my face.

2. Eye cream

Then onto my eye cream, I’m using my fingers to smooth that into the area around my eyes. I both pat it into my wrinkles and smooth it around them.

3. Serum and moisturizer

Next, I’m adding some wrinkle-correcting serum as well as some moisturizer.

4. Foundation

The next step is to apply some foundation and blend it in with a blending brush.

Applying concealer under the eyes

5. Concealer

I’m then dotting some concealer on my under-eye area as well as at the side of my eyes and my chin.

6. Finishing powder

Once I’ve blended the concealer in, I dust some finishing powder over my face.

Adding bronzer powder for warmth

7. Bronzing powder

Next, I dust bronzing powder onto my cheeks and nose for some added color.

Applying a white tone eyeshadow

8. Eyeshadow

For eyeshadow, I went for a white tone to apply under the arch of my brow and then right in the corners of my eyes to try and brighten them up a little bit.

Defining and filling eyebrows with brow gel

9. Brow gel

I’m then going in with some liquid brow gel to give my eyelashes some more definition. I use a cotton bud to wipe away any gel that might have smudged.

Applying strong moisturizer to the lips

10. Moisturizer (optional)

Along with all the prescription creams that I use for my eczema, I use a moisturizer for very dry skin. I put a tiny bit of this on my lips to try to nip my dry skin in the bud.

Applying mascara to the lashes

11. Mascara

I tend not to wear too much mascara as I don’t want it to look too clumpy, just a very gentle lick of it.

Applying red lipstick with a lip brush

12. Lipstick

Onto lipstick. I tend to go for quite muted, soft brown tones, but I’m thinking of going for a red lip now.

I always use a lip brush when doing lipstick, even if I’m doing a neutral lip. I find it virtually impossible with the actual lipstick; I don’t know how anyone does that. Then I always go over that line with a cotton bud.

I’m really not keen on lipliner, and I don’t want it to look like lipliner (even though it’s not), so where the lipstick clumps on the edges, I go over it with a cotton bud just to take that away.

I want my lipstick to look more like a red lip stain with a bit of a blurred line rather than any harsh lines. I think that harsh lines are quite hard to pull off.

Styling cream for hair

13. Styling cream

Now I’m going to show you how I style my hair. I start off by putting a styling cream on my hair, and once a month, I use an amazing treatment mask, which is essentially a really, really deep condition for your hair.

I tend to put it on after I’ve been in the bath and smother it all over my hair. Often, I put it on my skin as well, and then I sleep in it, so it’s on my hair for a maximum amount of hours, really getting in there and doing its thing. When I wash it off the next day, my hair feels incredible.

Blow-drying hair at the top

14. Blowdry

Now I’m going to show you how I style my hair and give it that lovely beach wave. The aim of the game, really, when I’m drying my hair is to dry the top section which has got the most damage from highlighting and straightening, to dry that the least.

That’s why I’m going round all the bottom section first, making sure it is dry and the then top section is the last thing I’m going to do, so it gets the least amount of heat.

Straightening hair with a flat iron

15. Straighten

Now that my hair is fully dry, I’m just going to go over a few of the wispy bits with my straighteners. Even though my fringe is touching my eyes a little bit, it is the perfect length for me.

It’s almost just at that tipping point of, oh you really need to have your fringe trimmed, but it’s just long enough to do that Parisian kind of flick. And when it’s long, you can sweep it to the side as well.

Curling hair into beach waves

16. Curl

Lastly, I’m going to use a curling wand to create some loose, natural beach waves.

With my hair and makeup complete, I feel beautiful and full of confidence. The great thing about natural makeup looks such as these is that they enhance your natural beauty rather than looking a bit fake and excessive.

I hope that I’ve given you some inspiration for how to do your hair and makeup over 40.
