Today, I'm going to show you how to make a DIY open-back t-shirt. I have an old t-shirt that's a bit tattered around the armpits and the bottom. So, I decided to revamp it and turn it into an open-back t-shirt.

This DIY doesn’t involve any sewing, so it is super easy and quick to do. Grab an old t-shirt, and let’s begin!

Tools and materials:

  • T-shirt
  • Chalk
  • Ruler
  • Scissors

1. Mark the top

Turn the t-shirt inside out and lay it down flat with the front side facing up. First, we are going to get rid of the sleeves.

Put your middle finger and index finger together, place them under the armpit of the t-shirt and then mark the point under your two fingers with some chalk. Do this on the other side as well.

2. Cut the sleeves

Cut the sleeve off from the top of the sleeve extended down to the point where you marked. First, trace the whole area that you are going to cut with chalk and then proceed to cut it.

3. Cut the bottom

Turn the top over so that the back side is facing you. Then, since the bottom part of the t-shirt is also a bit shabby, I’m just going to cut along the bottom.

4. Cut in the center

Next, find the center point of the t-shirt, and using a ruler, draw a line going all the way down. Proceed to cut the line from just under the collar. (Ensure that this collar part stays intact.)

5. Expand the opening

You now want to expand the opening and cut it into a triangle to have that open-back effect. First, mark where you want to cut using your chalk and ruler, and then proceed to cut it.

Lastly, turn the top the right way out, and you are done! You can either wear the top open like this...

...or I like to style it by bringing it up at the front, taking the two ends, and then tying them together at the back. Both ways look really cute.
