Easy Sewing Tutorial: How to Sew a Cute and Flowy Blouse
This is a very quick and easy, beginner-friendly method for how to sew a blouse in less than 30 minutes.
The measurements I give are for size 38 European (S) but I also show you how to make a blouse in sizes M, L and XL.
You will need 1.5 yards (1.4 m) of 32 inch (80 cm) wide fabric.
Tools and materials:
- Woven polyester or other drapable fabric
- Fabric marker
- Measuring tape
- Ruler
- Pins
- Scissors
- Rolled hem presser foot
- Sewing machine
1. Trim the fabric
Fold your fabric in half widthways and then lengthways, with the right side outside.
Place it flat with the main fold towards you and the double fold to your left.
The length of the blouse will be 27 inches (68 cm).
For size XL, leave the width of the folded fabric as 16 inches (40 cm). For other sizes, trim it to 15 inches (38 cm) for S and M and 15.5 inches (39 cm) for L.
2. Blouse sewing pattern
Measure 4 inches (10 cm) from the main fold along the shoulders for sizes S - M and 4.5 inches (11 cm) for L - XL.
Mark 2 inches (5 cm) from the shoulders along the main fold for all sizes.
Join the marks with a curved line.
Curve the diagonally opposite corner by 6 inches (15 cm) on each edge.
Cut out both curves.
3. Shape the front neck
Open out the fabric and refold it lengthways, with the right side inside.
Pin it together at one side of the neckline.
Increase the depth of the front neckline by 2.4 inches (6 cm) for sizes S - M and 3 inches (7 cm) for sizes L - XL.
Join the new mark to the neck at the shoulder and cut it out.
4. Finish the edges
Set your machine to a zigzag stitch with length 2 and width 4.
Change your regular presser foot for a rolled hem foot.
With the right side uppermost, sew a rolled hem around the neckline.
Knot the ends together and snip them off close to the stitching.
Hem around the outer edges of the fabric in the same way.
5. Side seams
Fold the fabric in half widthways with the wrong side inside, and make sure the side and lower edges are lined up.
Pin the layers together to stop them slipping.
Place a mark 10 inches (25 cm) down from the shoulder and 5 inches (12 cm) in from the side edges.
Measure and mark 4 inches (10 cm) in from the side seam at the bottom of the straight side
edge.
Join the two marks with a straight line, ending 2 inches (5 cm) above the lower edge.
Repeat on the other side.
Pin the sides of the fabric together outside the lines.
Change back to your normal presser foot.
With the right side of the front uppermost, sew along the lines using a straight stitch.
