If you love wearing sweatpants but you’re just not sure how to wear them in public and still look stylish, this tutorial is definitely for you! There’s nothing better than throwing on a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie, but why should we always keep comfort at home? Follow my step by step tutorial and learn how to style your comfy clothes to be trendy and cute. We’re taking loungewear to a whole new level!

How to wear sweatpants with style

Before we get started I wanted to show you a typical outfit I love to wear around the house. I feel so comfortable in my baggy sweatpants and an oversized sweatshirt but there’s no way I would wear this in public. I had to find a way to turn comfortable into presentable! Here are some tips and tricks on taking cozy and making it trendy!

Wear knit pants

If you don’t have knit pants then I definitely suggest getting a pair. They have all the comfort of a pair of baggy sweatpants but their form-fitting style adds a touch of trendiness, making them the best of both worlds!

Crop the hoodie

To make this cozy outfit ready for the outside world I had to figure out a way to make this sweatshirt a little shorter. This is one of my favorites to wear at home so there was no way I was going to cut it! I tried tucking it into the pants but tucking something so oversized just doesn’t work! I figured that if I tuck the front of the hoodie into a long-lined sports bra it creates a perfect cropped effect!

To create a slightly more fitted look I folded over the ends of my sleeves. I love this outfit and I would totally wear it out if I had to run a few errands. It’s all the cozy I want from loungewear with the added bonus of being super cute!

Add a sweater

Another styling tip is to switch the sweatshirt for an actual sweater. I love this sweater! It’s so comfortable and soft but for this outfit, it’s a little too long!

Tuck it in

I decided to redo my little sports bra tuck trick to shorten the sweater. I love how this small trick can change the look completely!

I adore this two-toned look! It actually looks like a two-piece set you can find in the store. The tan knit pants and the cream sweater definitely take comfort in a boho-chic direction!

Add accessories

Accessories really do go a long way in making an outfit. Adding a cute hat and matching bag can make this cozy look a fashion-forward show stopper!

How to style black sweatpants
Style black leggings

Black leggings are a staple in my closet and another thing I wear when I just want to feel comfy.

Add a t-shirt

To spruce these black leggings up a bit I like to add a nice casual t-shirt. This leaves you with a great outfit that is both comfy and casual!

Add a jean jacket

Adding a jean jacket to this casual outfit can make all the difference. It seriously makes it look like a whole lot of effort was put in before you left the house. Accessorizing with sneakers or a cap can add a cute, sporty style to your look.

Wear a knit skirt

If you’re having one of those days where all you want to do is stay in sweatpants but you have somewhere to be, this tip is for you!

Pair with a sweater

Knit two-pieces are all the rage right now so I decided to create my own by adding this tan sweater to my knit skirt. As you can see, it’s a little too long for the look I’m going for.

Tie a knot

To style up this outfit, you can repeat the sports bra tuck, but when it comes to sweaters I often like to tie a small knot at the front. I love how fitted this looks! It’s definitely a great way to dress up comfort!

Wear a hat

You can grab a hat and add a pair of black combat boots to take this look to the next level! This outfit is super comfy and cozy and you’re practically still in sweats.

Add a belt

We all have days when we just have to wear a big, comfy sweater! A great tip is to use a belt to style up the look a little.

To get this great look put a belt around your waist and pull the sweater up until you get the style you want. I adore how easy it is to look great in this outfit while still feeling comfortable!

Now we can all look cute and stay cozy at the same time! Which tip is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below!
