Shop Your Closet for These Fall 2024 Fashion Trends
Today, I’ll be shopping my closet for fall 2024 fashion trends.
If you’re like me and tend to splurge at the start of a new season, try shopping your closet first.
It’s a fun and creative way to see what you already have before buying new items. Let me show you how to shop your closet!
1. Dress like a debutant
Debutant dressing refers to the comeback of popular styles from the 1950s and 1960s. This look contrasts sharply with the sporty and streetwear aesthetics of early 2000s fashion.
I much prefer the glamor, elegance, and sophistication of classic fashion over the shock value of more modern trends.
To achieve the debutant look using clothes from my own wardrobe, I’ve paired a black pencil skirt with a black and white striped top and added a stylish belt.
I love this classic silhouette—the pencil skirt is sleek, refined, and very sophisticated. Even if sophistication, glamor, and elegance aren’t your usual style, you can still embrace this trend by incorporating a tailored piece or opting for more luxurious fabrics.
2. Swaths of fabric
What could be more luxurious than a large swath of fabric, like a big poncho or an oversized scarf?
All you need to do is grab a scarf, wrap it around yourself, and you’re set!
3. Burgundy bags
I love the idea of a burgundy bag, but I don’t really need one right now. If you don’t own a burgundy bag, you might consider incorporating a burgundy belt or burgundy boots into your outfit for a stylish finish.
4. Cardigan club
The idea of wearing a cardigan really embodies the debutant dressing trend. French women often wear cardigans with flared jeans and no top underneath, and I do that too. Personally, I usually wear my cardigans more like sweaters.
I like the idea of Alexa Chung wearing cardigans with mini skirts, so here’s the look I’ve put together inspired by that style.
5. Barrel silhouettes
The barrel silhouette is gaining attention, especially with barrel-leg denim. This shape is now extending beyond denim to other types of trousers.
I don’t own any barrel-leg pieces but the barrel silhouette is characterized by its structured shape and added volume.
To achieve a similar look, I’m wearing a pair of loose trousers and have tucked the ends into my sneakers to create a bit more volume around the legs.
6. Khaki comeback
Wearing khaki from head to toe is a classic trend that has been around for years, ranging from greenish to earthy brown tones. Khaki is a great alternative to traditional neutrals.
I don’t have much khaki except for these trousers, even though they aren’t exactly the shade of khaki seen in the inspiration images.
I paired the trousers with a baby blue cardigan. It’s a bold choice for me, and I wouldn’t have thought to combine these two items before.
7. There's something about Chloe
Chloe’s designs have always been known for their soft, romantic, and slightly folksy vibe, often inspired by '70s artsy and laid-back styles.
I’ve embraced this look with a long silk dress I own that has a front slit, a ruffled hem and a flowy feel—very much in the Chloe style.
8. Check, please
Every fall, checks and heritage patterns make a comeback. This season, bold color mixes and high-contrast black and white are what it’s all about.
If you have any plaid pieces, you’re in luck. The key is to style them elegantly rather than focusing on finding a new type of check or piece.
Here I’m wearing a vintage checkered mini skirt paired with a flowy black blouse, inspired by the Chloe trend, and fun printed stockings.
Plaid also fits well with classic and heritage styles, which align with the debutant look. To embrace that aesthetic, you could pair a plaid skirt with a turtleneck sweater and a blazer.
9. To the point
Pointed-toe shoes are very much in style right now, offering a chic and ladylike look that aligns with the debutant aesthetic.
Here, I have a pair of khaki pointed-toe shoes with a high heel, which ties in nicely with the khaki trend. You could also opt for a kitten-heel or flats for an equally elegant effect.
10. Power puff girls
The final trend is all about going big—from sleeves to skirt hems—embracing playful textures and bold proportions.
I didn’t think I had this trend in my closet, but it turns out I do - I have a tulle ballerina skirt that I bought back in 2010. I plan to pair it with a stripy white sweater and my khaki shoes.
