3 Ways to Wear Your Sweatshirt Outfits

You may not consider sweatshirt outfits as something a fashionista would wear. But if you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, then you know I believe almost anything can be styled in a variety of ways.

Why not mix up our wardrobe to make it work for an assortment of occasions?

Life and our outward appearance seem to have gotten MUCH more casual in the last 10-15 years. In fact, when athleisure first came out as part of our everyday wear, I wasn’t too impressed. But joggers and sweatshirts have definitely become mainstream.

I'm sharing 3 different ways to wear your sweatshirts. 2 of them are in this tutorial, and the other one is included in my blog post.

Cathie: Sweatshirt Over a Dress

Cathie paired her patchwork spaghetti strap dress and pink sweatshirt together with a pair of white sneakers and a print purse.

The idea to add a sweatshirt over a dress makes the dress look like a skirt. It’s a fabulous trick for a couple of reasons:

1-If the top of the dress is too tight, or your bra straps are exposed

2-It’s smart for traveling in case you’ve gotten stains on the top part of the dress

3-You’ve made the sweatshirt fancier than just athletic wear

Insider tip: You can belt your sweatshirt to create a different length for it since some sweatshirts aren’t stiff enough to stay tucked under alone. I’ve showcased this trick in the past here with a sweater.

That’s what Cathie did for her example so the sweatshirt hem would end closer to her waist.

I love how Cathie is as thrifty as Lesley, my mom, and myself. She told me that her dress was on clearance for $8, the sweatshirt was only $3 and the shoes were thrifted from Goodwill with the tags still on them.

The purse has been in her collection for over 10 years so definitely a classic.

Charlotte: Blazer with a Sweatshirt

Another fabulous way to wear our sweatshirt outfits is to camouflage the fact that it’s a sweatshirt, to begin with.

By adding a blazer on top of your casual gear, then you’ve upgraded the outfit instantly.

It’s also a great way to add a clothing item of a color that may look better near your face if the sweatshirt is an unflattering color to your complexion.

This is exactly why you shouldn’t be too enthralled with purging all of your workwear when you retire.

Insider tip: Other items can be worn under a blazer like this. Think about your sleep tops, workout tops, and even swim tops. This is exactly why it’s helpful NOT to categorize your clothing, but to consider them for any day.

I recently showcased this with a sleepwear top under my denim jacket.

I just love how Charlotte used her print mixing skills with the jeans and sweatshirt. In fact, they are so similar you might think she bought them together. However, she didn’t. She made the jeans, and they are reversible to a grey material on the other side. ( Worn here on our Alaska cruise seen as she is boarding the train)

The point about layering like this with a blazer is the fact, that you may need a slightly bigger blazer than what you’d wear over a thin blouse.

My mom didn’t have any larger blazers so she borrowed this from Lesley. It’s like Lesley was here at our blog shoot in spirit instead!!

Insider tip: Sure, it’s important to find items that fit well, but it’s also just as important to have a variety of styles in your closet if you want to get creative with your clothing.

You may think oversized is sloppy, but here’s a perfect example of how it can work. Therefore, if you see a blazer at the thrift store that is bigger than what you normally buy, consider this style option.
