Should you wash double gauze before sewing?

It’s best practice to wash most fabrics before sewing, and double gauze fabric is no exception. Double gauze gets softer with every wash and can shrink a lot with the first wash. So,if you’re planning to make clothes, it’s best to wash and dry the fabric first.

1. Adjust your sewing machine settings

Lower the presser foot tension and increase the stitch length. This will provide some space for the fabric to move.

2. Use a walking foot

Using a walking foot will decrease the grip of the top layer of double gauze when sewing. You can buy a walking foot easily and cheaply on Amazon.

3. Staystitch edges

I staystitch all the edges before sewing layers together. The stretch of the fabric is really different with or without staystitching. I used a staystitch for the piece on the left.

4. Use double-sided fabric tape

I sometimes use double-sided fabric tape or fuse with interfacing on seams when I’m afraid of stretching out the double gauze. It helps make sewing easier too.

5. Finish seams with a serger

Double gauze frays a lot so I recommend that you finish all seams with a serger. If you don’t have a serger, I recommend tighter or more compact stitches for your seams.

I also recommend that you always press seams after sewing, whether the fabric is double gauze or not. It gives a professional finish.

6. Use a double needle

When the fabric is giving me a hard time, I use the combination of a walking foot and a double needle. It solves my problem every time.
