In this tutorial, I’m going to teach you one of my favorite sewing hacks and show you exactly why you should keep a fork in your sewing kit!

All you need is a fork and some fabric, and you’ll have the easiest and most perfectly-sized pleats in no time. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Fabric
  • Fork
Creating a single pleat

1. Create a single pleat

Fold your fabric and sew it to create your first pleat.

Sliding fabric into fork

2. Slide the fabric into the fork

After creating the first pleat by hand, slide the fabric between the first and second prongs of the fork.

Twisting fork

3. Twist the fork

Twist the fork upwards so the fabric folds over the top of the fork and the fabric that is between the prongs is now at the bottom of the fork.

Laying fork down

4. Lay the fork down

Lay your fork so it’s facing down to finish the fold.

Sewing

5. Remove the fork and sew

Slide the fork out of the pleat and finish sewing!

6. Repeat

Repeat this process until your fabric is fully pleated!
