In this tutorial, we’re going to transform an old coat into a 2-piece blazer skirt set. This cropped shirt jacket and wrap mini skirt pair is perfect for both casual and formal wear. Wear them together or just mix and match! Let’s get started.

Tools and materials:

  • Coat jacket
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Knit bias binding
  • Snap buttons
Cropping suit jacket to create 2-piece blazer skirt set

1. Crop the suit jacket

Measure and mark 17.71 inches from the top of the coat jacket. This is where you’ll cut across the coat jacket to crop it and separate it from the fabric we’ll use for the skirt.

Sewing on bias binding

2. Sew on bias binding

Flip the suit jacket over and sew knit bias binding to the back to finish the edges.

Pinning and sewing jacket

Then flip the suit jacket back over and fold the knit bias binding over the edge. Pin and sew.

Sewing the lapels open

3. Sew the lapels open

Measure about 4.72 inches up and fold the lapels of the jacket over. Sew the lapels open by stitching a triangle on the ends.

Sewing buttons onto the jacket

4. Sew on buttons to the jacket

Use scissors or a seam ripper to remove the buttons from the bottom half of the suit jacket that you cut off earlier.

Sewing buttons onto the jacket

Hand sew them onto the suit jacket.

Sewing snap buttons onto jacket

5. Sew on snap buttons

Instead of making a hole in the fabric so you can button up the button you just added, sew on a snap button on both sides of the front panels, one button being directly underneath the button.

Sewing the remaining fabric together

6. Sew the remaining fabric together

We’re done with the top, so now let’s move on to the skirt. Start by sewing the two pieces of fabric together to create one long piece.

Sewing on bias binding

7. Sew on bias binding

Sew on the bias binding to both sides of the skirt.

Folding both sides of the skirt over each other

8. Fold both sides of the skirt over each other

From the open edge, 6.69 inches on one side and 6.69 inches on the other. This point is where both sides will overlap, so fold the fabric here.

Sewing on the buttons

9. Sew on the buttons

Sew on the remaining buttons. One should match the already existing hole inside the outer skirt flap.

Button on outside of the skirt

The other should be on the outside.

Sewing on snap buttons

10. Sew on snap buttons

This time, you should sew on two sets of snap buttons. One directly behind the outermost button you sewed, and the other further inside the flap.

Sewing a line from the top

11. Sew a line from the top to the outer edge

Flip the skirt inside out and measure the size of your waist plus 1.57 inches divided by 2. Mark this measurement at the center.

Marking down from the top of the skirt

Then mark and measure 7.87 inches down from the top.

Marking diagonal line onto skirt

Use these two marks to mark a diagonal line from the top of the skirt to the outer edge. Sew.

Sewing the inside flaps down

Sew the flaps down on the inside as well.

Sewing on the bias binding

12. Finish sewing on the bias binding

Sew on the knit bias binding to the hem of the skirt, and around the lapels and cuffs.
