1. Cut out the pattern

Cut the pattern out of paper, then lay the fabric flat and place the pattern on top.

Before you cut, make sure that the hemmed edge of the blanket is at the outside edge of the front panels opposite the side seams. This gives your coat a beautiful finish in the front.

Cut two of the front pieces. Lay the back pattern piece on a folded piece of fabric so when you cut it, it’s one symmetrical piece.

Creating facing for the neckline

2. Make the facing

Use the paper to do the facing for the neckline. Measure at the neckline area 2 inches or 5cm all around on the paper.

Cutting out the pattern for the facing

Cut the paper half-moon out. Lay the paper pattern on the fabric and cut the piece out.

Pinning the facing to the neckline

Pin the facing on the neckline and sew. Fold the facing to the inside and pin down.

Pinning the bodice pieces together

3. Sew the bodice

Lay the back piece right side up. Lay the front panels so their right sides are touching the back panel’s right sides. Pin the shoulders, sleeves, and side seams together.

4. Sew the pockets

Cut two pieces of fabric to measure 9.84 by 15.74 inches.

Pinning the pockets for the coat

Fold each piece in half, right sides together. Pin each piece in place.

Leaving an opening when sewing

Sew leaving about 2 inches open.

Trimming the corners of the pockets

Trim the corners. Use the hole to flip the pocket to the right side. Use the scissors or another hard pointy object to push the fabric to have sharp corners and make the pocket as flat as possible.

Attaching the pockets to the DIY quilted coat

5. Attach the pockets

Measure 4.72 inches from the bottom up to place the pockets.

Put the pockets right sides facing up on either side in the center of each of the front panels. Make sure to place the unsewn gap of the pocket at the bottom of the pocket.

Pin in place. Topstitch all around the pocket, leaving the top part open.

6. Make and attach the cuff

Cut two pieces of fabric to measure 6.3 X 12.6 inches. Fold each piece in half, right sides together. Sew the short end to create a loop. Fold the loop in half so the right sides are facing out.

Pinning the cuffs to the DIY quilted coat

Pin the raw edge of the cuff to the bottom edge of the sleeve, so their right sides are together. Sew on the wrong side.

Hemming the DIY quilted coat

7. Sew the hem

Double fold the bottom of the coat to the wrong side. Pin in place. Sew using a straight stitch.
