Recreating Kate: Navy Blazer

For a while now I’ve been wanting a navy blazer like Kate Middleton wore in the photo below. I love the classic styling of the blazer paired with a simple striped shirt underneath.

It has also been WAY too long since I did a Recreating Kate post. So if you’re new here (welcome!) I’ll explain really quick. I love Kate Middleton’s style like many of you. And while I can’t afford many of the designers she buys from, I CAN sew for myself and get the same look with patterns and fabric that are available for much less.

A few months ago I made a striped shirt that is similar to Kate’s–you might remember it from my Birkin Flares post and although its different, it gives the same effect. The shirt is a Gwen top from See Kate Sew and I did a separate review of it when it first came out. I did add my own colorblocking to the top (and moved the placket to the side) but you could make one almost exactly like Kate’s with this pattern. Similarly, the blazer is different in several ways, but it gives the same effect. I used the Giverney Blazer pattern from Winter Wear Designs, and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I don’t typically wear jackets, but I wanted to make one and see if I wear it regularly.

I used a navy twill for the blazer and its nice and sturdy. I made the pattern as directed with one exception–I wanted it a little longer so I added two inches to the hemline. With that modification, I then had to take the back center seam in a bit to take out some of the added flare. And I really like how it turned out. Its a classic silhouette and the overall fit is nice. And it helped me achieve the look I was going for which was what I wanted.

Giverney Blazer Details

Pattern Name and Designer: Giverney Blaze r by Winter Wear Designs.Price: $9.95Size Range: XXS-XXXLSize I Made: SmallWhat I Like: I like the silhouette and shapeWhat I Don’t Like: I’d love a longer blazer with full lining to really feel like its a wardrobe staple.Modifications: I added two inches of length to the blazer and extended the sleeves from 3/4 to long sleeve.Would I Sew it Again: I’m not sure. You get a nice finish with the pattern, but I think I’d like a longer shape. And a lot of it depends on whether I wear this one regularly.
