I am going to be trying out the Curlsmith hair makeup. There are five colors in the line and today, I'm going to do a little experiment and make my own color mixture.

I'm going to mix ruby and turquoise to make purple. Hair makeup is a great way to change your hair color, without the risk of damage.

Hair makeup rinses right out of your hair when you shower. You use it as the last step in your hair routine, over the top of a leave-in conditioner or a curl cream. Since they're also a gel, they're going to give you great hold.

My hair is naturally red, and it can be hard to get colors to show up on my hair type. But these hair makeups are designed to work on all hair colors.

Obviously, they'll show up slightly differently on different hair colors.

Tools and materials:

  • Hair makeup
  • Blow dryer with diffuser
  • Brush
Preparing the hair

1. Prepare your hair

Start by cleaning and conditioning your hair. Comb your hair and leave it damp, just removing some of the excess water with a towel.

I'm wearing a towel and a T-shirt that I don't mind getting dirty, just in case. While the hair makeup is wet it can transfer to your clothes.

You'll get a little bit of glitter on your hands when you touch your hair, but once it’s dry the color shouldn't transfer onto your clothes.

Applying hair makeup

2. Apply your color

I mixed the blue and red and got a gorgeous purple.

Apply the hair makeup in the same way that you would apply hair gel. Just glaze it over your hair and use your fingers to comb it on.

I like to brush the back of my hair separately to the front. I find that helps me get better definition on the back.

Keep applying while you shape, form, and scrunch your hair. Flip your head to the sides to really cover every area.

3. For stronger color

If you’re having trouble seeing the color, try to dry your hair a little more. This will help achieve a more vibrant look.

It definitely gets messy when you're applying it, but the results are going to be so good.

I defused my hair until it was about 80% dry, and then I went in and added a little bit more of the hair makeup for a bit more vibrancy.

You will need to scrunch it out. But when you scrunch it, I would suggest doing so either outside or in a room where you don't mind getting glitter. When you scrunch, some glitter does fall out.

It's kind of like eyeshadow particles. I did mine in the bathtub and then it just easily washed off the tub.

Dried hair

4. Apply more once dry, for even more vibrancy

When it was fully dry, I still wanted it to be a little bit more vibrant, because after I scrunched it, some of the vibrancy did go away with the glitter that fell out.

I just mixed a little bit more in my hand and went over some single curls just to coat them.

Styled hair

5. Style and enjoy

Now you have a new hair color until you next shampoo your hair. I love my purple hair so much. I think it looks so cool. It's kind of like a purple auburn color.

You can definitely see my red hair trying to shine through because that's just what red hair does. I think because red hair is naturally vibrant, it's just so hard to cover it up.

It's nice to switch up your look and know that you’re not damaging your hair. I've had so much fun playing around with this hair color today.

I absolutely love hair makeup. I think it's so fun.

I wanted to show you my day two hair because I'm really impressed with it. The curls look amazing. It's still got a purple tint to it, but it has faded a bit.

I slept on a pillowcase that I didn't mind getting dirty, just in case, but there's literally nothing on the pillow. I’m very impressed

I probably used slightly more than a quarter of a bottle. I would say there's about two to three uses per bottle for my hair.

But my hair is very long, so if you have shorter hair, then you'll probably get more uses out of it.
